Nasty Habits Hey SIA -- what era Furry? Yazoo type stuff or the Prestige type stuff. I have been hooked on Prestige stuff for a while now -- incredible sound and excellent performances. Best acoustic St. Louis Blues EVER!

Oh, yeah -- right now I am listening to Diamond Joe White - Canadian Country oddball extraordinaire.
Before that it was that Graham Parker live LP that was only released to radio stations back when he was still on Mercury.
My local video store was playing "Casino Boogie" earlier today when I walked in there and it made me do the sophisticated boom boom.
Then I walked into a record store up the street that was playing "Can You Hear the Music?"
That kinda week, y'all.

not sure nasty maybe you can help

the disc i have is from a magazine published in the UK years ago entitled "the blues collection"

the tracks are all dated 1928 and include:

I Will Turn Your Money Green

Judge Harsh Blues

Mistreatin' Mama

Kassie Jones (Parts 1 & 2)

Cannon- Ball Blues

Furry's Blues

Dry Land Blues

so is that Yahoo or Prestige?? is there a significant difference between the two?? (TIA)

"Furry's Blues", incidentally, opens with perhaps the most uncharitable and misanthropic blues verse i've probably ever heard, to wit:

"I believe I'll buy me a grave-yard of my own

Yes,I believe I'll buy me a grave-yard of my own

I'm gonna kill everyone that has done me wrong"

the disc also featues some tracks by one of Lewis' contemporaries a guy named Frank Stokes - they are also dated late 1920's - many of his sides feature ensemble playing including a lot of fiddle, the sound of which most stones fans would hear and say - "that sounds just like 'Country Honk'" - do you know anything about him??

cheers my man

The recordings you have are Yazoo recordings. Can't believe "Falling Down Blues" isn't on there! Anyway, I don't know that the 78's of the period were actually released on Yazoo, his Yazoo CD is one of the absolute best collections of 20s Blues I know about.

The Prestige stuff, on the other hand, was recorded in 1961. While I was brainwashed in my early days by writers and critics to perceive the 20s recordings of ANY blues man as "better" in some way, I think that I might prefer some things about Furry the Elder above Furry the Younger. Certainly the recordings are easier on the ear, but the performances have a depth and power (sometimes because of the awesome reverb in the recordings, but mainly because Furry can take his time) that I like more. There's a 20 Cut CD called "Shake 'Em On Down" that collects his two 1961 releases from this period. It's an incredible CD of blues recordings, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Got the best solo "St. Louis Blues" I know about, and many more incredible recordings besides.

Nasty says check it out.

Can you imagine watching this guy opening for the Stones in the 70s? Those were the freakin' days!!!

Frank Stokes conceivably and according to some legends started the whole freakin' ball of wax. He maybe was playing in Memphis at the turn of the century and as far as I know his recordings with the Beale Street Sheiks are some of the first blues "string band" recordings --- he did weird styles of popular/vaudeville tunes in addition to the harder 12 bar blues stuff and this emphasis on melody infused blues, was, as near as I can tell, rock and roll just dying to plug in. You're right about the Country Honk connection, although I don't know if it was intentional at the time, but Stokes & the Beale Street Sheiks, the Mississippi Sheiks, The Memphis Jug Band (who were, as a band, a front for drug trafficking at parties!) and Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers were as far as I am concerned the world's first and often greatest rock and roll bands.

At the moment -- Rose Maddox - Queen of the West - 80s recordings of the legendary country queen, backed by Merle Haggard and the Strangers.

Before that: The Notorious Byrd Brothers and the Oblivians' Popular Favorites.

Reigning Sound L-I-V-E tonight - I shall request "I'd Much Rather Be with the Boys" in honor of you.

I wondah why.....

I'm worried about y'alls. I'm worried y'all niggies go straight to the Tops. Don't do it. Not jess yet. Play it back agin! I still worried about y'alls.

Ah fuck. I'm so fucking lucky. I saw that 2002-03 tour in a few different places, including Astoria where this groove was washed over us all Stones lovers.

The Rolling Stones were as good as any music gets that night. Yeah, I'm worried, jess can't seem to find my way.......

And I got this little recording of that event by my side, because of peeps I've met. Now, that is cool.

after listening, I believe the bmw source is an AUD, but an excellent source nonetheless. the tosh set has a few rough spots, but the overall quality equals (or betters) the quality of any recording of the Bush Doctor's performances that I have come across to date.

Cant Catch Me "Un'Sung' Stories" by Phil Alvin with Sun Ra and his Arkestra and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Hooked up my turntable about a month ago just to listen to this album on LP since as far as I know it hasn't, almost criminally, been reissued on CD.

But, yesterday for the Fourth, blasted "Welcome to Australia" on the boombox while frolicking around the pool.

Water Dragon "Un'Sung' Stories" by Phil Alvin with Sun Ra and his Arkestra and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

Hot Damn!

I am impressed - it has been nearly a couple of decades since I've read or heard anyone mention Sun Ra! Yes, a great deal of really interesting music will be lost because of the transition from vinyl to CD and the increasing concentration of "what's sellable" in the hand of the few.

Wasn't he from Philadelphia?
