Scottfree's post is a dazzling tour de force that certifies him as the world's preeminent specialist in examining musical power and its uses for good and ill. Of all the many Stonesian postings , none approaches Scottfree's work in painstaking thoroughness, meticulous detail and the capture of character. ....With his Tolstoyian touch for story telling and drama, S. gives us a fascinating ride through the corridors of Rolling Stones sovereignty.......................

The Doors are great, JJFlash - dont let any of the naysayers on this board lead you to thinking otherwise...

find the "Rock is Dead" bootleg - that one is fantastic!

Nasty Habits Yeah, it's the same song, Mac_Daddy -- it's a New Orleans piana standard about hanging out with smack addicts and the like, covered by everyone from Louis Jordan to Dr. John (Mac Rebbenack is back on this thread!) to, yer right, the great Clash version (although James Booker, himself a total junkie New Orleans pianist, took it to a whole nother level.) The "original" version is by a cat named James Wayne and can be found on the unbelievably awesome CD "The Roots of Chuck Berry", a fab collection that should hip anybody to the depth of rock and roll's roots. Apparently Doctor John claimed to know something like 120 verses to this number at some point in his life.

Right now, I'm listening to that James Booker CD once again.

mac_daddy right on! thanks for all of the info - you really do know your sh*t.

myself, I have been going back to the Hendrix quite a bit(9 to the Universe, Lonely Avenue [parts 1 and 2], a collection called Electric Church, and the KPFA tapes), although lately I find that I am enjoying Springsteen's Lost Master 19, too.

as for Stones --> got a nice new (to me) El Mocambo source, as well as Paris aux Printemps and Closer than Close. The El Mocambo source is a keeper; I am not so hot on the other two, although the sound quality of both is quite good)...

(not my notes)

This is the club date taped in Toronto, Canada on March 3 & 4, 1977 that became side 3 of the "Love you Live" album (or the first 4 songs of the CD 2, lol). This was also the same time as Keith's Toronto drug bust (see my "Toronto Blues" post). A very interesting show that has been compiled from several sources it includes some real gems. In the Stones tradition of playing songs live before they appear on an officially released album ("Loving Cup" was played at Hyde Park in 1969 but didn't appear officially until "Exile on Main Street") we get a stirring eight-minute version of "Worried About You." Also about as good as "Dance Little Sister" you will hear sans the studio version. What would Mick Taylor have done here? None-the-less Woody does it justice and Keith is on fire. Other points of interest include "Crackin' Up" which is longer then the officially released version due to edits. It's quite interesting to hear the full version. To fill out this offering there is "Pretty Beat Up" and "Black Limousine" from Ron Woods 1992 tour. "Lost and Lonely" is from the 1979 tour of the New Barbarians including Keith Richards and finally we get "Fool to Cry" from Frankfurt in 1976. Enjoy.

01. Dance Little Sister
02. Little Red Rooster
03. Around and Around
04. Hand of Fate
05. Route 66
06. Worried About You
07. Crackin' Up
08. Let's Spend the Night Together
09. Pretty Beat Up
10. Black Limousine
11. Lost & Lonely
12. Fool to Cry

NOTE: All songs fade in and fade out, sorry that's how my source is. Also "Let's Spend the Night Together" fades before the song ends.

edit: I realize that in the El Mocambo notes, the seeder mentions his "Toronto Blues" collection. Here is the info about that one. It is pretty sweet (and it is also next on tonight's playlist)...

(not my notes)

Keith Richards
"Toronto Blues"
March 12, 1977, 1980 & 81

These are among some of the most poignant songs ever recorded by a rock-n-roller. I put this CD together years ago from some old LPs I had. I have not removed any pops or
crackles as I enjoy the nostalgia of "listening to records," and in fact it adds to the mood and listening enjoyment of these tracks. Most of these songs were recorded during
Keith's drug bust in Canada in 1977. He was in a desperate state because it looked like he was going to spend time in prison. The sessions started the night before the
sentencing on March 12, 1977. Victor Bockris writes:

"Richards went into Interchange Studios . . .and recorded five songs . . . The most remarkable aspect of these recordings was Keith's rusty, high-pitched voice, which had
never been heard sounding like this on record . . .The years of smoking, drinking and staying up for days singing and talking had added layers too-his defensive, noncommittal,
negative adolescent voice which had given way to the keenly expressive, edge-of-tears sound of a man straining to give vent to his emotions. . . Listening to him sing . . . one got the feeling that Keith had thrown his whole being into the sessions and was finally unleashing emotions he had never expressed verbally. This was the closest he had come
to expressing how fragile and tortured he often felt."

There are a couple of takes of most of the Toronto songs. The first take is generally Keith on the piano, with subsequent takes that have added guitar and additional harmony: all by Keith. The other tunes were recorded a few years later in 1981 at Longview Farms.

" . . . he sat down at the piano and started to play a sentimental . . . ballad . "I suppose you think it's all fun being me. Listen, I never get a chance to sing by myself like this, play the piano, without some bastard weirding out and asking me why I wasn't playing the guitar and looking mean . . . I bet you didn't think I could play the piano, did you? Or sing classics from the thirties? Well, I can.""

The CD closes with 2 great tracks from the Compass Point Studios during the recording for the "Emotional Rescue" album. On track 19 Keiths "gold-labelled vocals glide
competently over what is quite a sentimental song." On track 20 we get "a classic out-take featuring a 'one-sided duet' between Keith Richards and an unknown female artist.
Seemingly written by Keith . . . it is a splendid ballad full of soulful ramblings.

Enjoy this very personal look at these never meant to be released recordings.
