you had it wrong

great collection, isn't it?

August 1st, 2004 10:32 PM
stonedinaustralia yes indeed - so far i have the LIB remaster and mainstreet revisited

a mate has "dancing so free" which i'm going to get a copy of - look forward to that as i always thought the "original" sound of GHS was always a bit "muddy" and lacked a bit of presence

be interested to know if he's done black and blue and what he did with it as that had a fairly "clear" sound to it anyway

has he done "Out of Our Heads"???
August 1st, 2004 11:04 PM
mac_daddy yes - to all of the above.

the black and blue ("rags to excess") is one of my favorite ones he has done...

the new one i got of the early stuff (first two albums) is great, too...

dancing so free (ghs) is awesome, and short and curlies (iorr) is evem beter...

August 1st, 2004 11:09 PM
stonedinaustralia thanks mac_d

if i PM you could we work something out - i'd like to get OOOH (what did he call that one??)and "rags to excess" esp.

cheers

Lil Brian Nasty Habits-

Great Mingus list to which I'd add:
Ah Um
Pithecanthropus Erectus
Oh Yeah
East Coasting.

It always comes back to Charlie Parker, doesn't it?

mac_daddy haven't listened to loads of mingus, but i like what i have heard...

different bassist, and a whole different sound, but...

have either of you heard marc johnson's "bass desires" and "bass desires (second sight)"??? they are two of my favorite albums by anybody, and the playing is superb (4 piece with frisell, scofield, erskine). the vinyl i have came out on that EG label, so the quality is top-notch. my copies have been played less than 10 times a piece - i bought the CDs, and am preserving the vinyl.

desert island selections, for sure.

and, to be played at casa del macdaddy momentarily, oliver nelson's "blues and the abstract truth." this album might be another desert island choice, if just for the first track the rest of the album is solid, too.

_____

on a completely unrelated note (and with a flurry of self-fluffing), one of my recordings is now up on the archive. you can stream the mp3s, download mp3s, or go for the gusto, and download the lossless version. the recording is of mike watt and george hurley performing minutemen songs as a duet...

Yeah, well, you know what they say -- If Charlie Parker was a gunslinger, there'd be a whole lot of dead copycats.

Of the amazing records on your list the only one I haven't heard is East Coasting but all and sundry say I am nuts for not having studified it, so I think I shall correct that situation as soon as possible considering I am on a serious Mingus jag at the moment.

Mac_Daddy -- I only know Marc Johnson thru his work with Bill Evans, but because of yr. recommendation I will check out these recordings. Thanks for alerting my radar. And SUPER thanks for the link to the Watt/Hurley show -- I was unaware that such a thing was going on, and I will be streaming with pleasure this afternoon. The Minutemen were a very special band. Oh, and check yr. PM.
