Ten Thousand Motels WATTS MARVELS AT RICHARDS AND WORRIES ABOUT WOOD

Cancer survivor CHARLIE WATTS marvels at his ROLLING STONES bandmate KEITH RICHARDS' constitution because the guitarist has outlived many who have died living his kind of lifestyle.

Watts, 64, admits he has studied the 61-year-old guitar great over the years and feels he has achieved what so many other have failed to achieve - the ability to control his hardcore drug and alcohol intake.

The drummer explains, "He's got an amazing constitution and he's very strict on himself, in a funny way. He never overdid drugs.

"He always had a set amount that he did, and he would never do the whole lot at once. Most people who do that are dead. He could have fallen... (but) he never did. He has a very strong will to live."

But Watts, who was diagnosed with throat cancer last year (04), admits he often worries about his other bandmate RONNIE WOOD - because he can't control his urges.

Wood, 58, recently checked into a rehab facility after coming to the conclusion that his boozing had become a big problem.

Watts tells rock magazine Rolling Stone, "It's hard for Ronnie. He has a nervous energy. If he's talking to you or playing guitar, he's fine. But he can't do that all day long.

"When he puts a guitar down, that's when he wants a cigarette of a drink."

Too Tough I'm not worried. Ronnie's gonna make it. He rules. Anybody dissagree?

And "Sweet Lady Mary" is sublime. But that's besides the point...

Lethargy Keith can control his drug and alcohol intake?

If that were true he wouldn't be nearly braindead and barely able to construct sentences, and his guitar playing wouldn't have deteriorated so much.

Give him credit, the "braindead bit" is probably largely an act. The rocker-pirate-junkie persona.
