It's anyway strange to see Johnny Rotten on such a list, considering that his career lasted 2 years only - from early 1976 to early 1978. The other people who are top ranked have been going for lotsa years....nobody would have mentioned for instance David Bowie if he quit in 1971. "Modern Rotten" is not a factor for him being on that list.
BTW, James Brown should definately be on the list.

As for Johnny Lydon, I've seen him command a hostile audience, & he's totally original, he doesn't copy anybody, Bowie is a fantastic showman & he didn't quit in '71, I've even seen Jagger copy some of his theatrical stand on stage, he's another original, as is Alice Cooper.

Guitarman, I think you misunderstood what I meant,
I wasn't disagreeing with anyone of those 2 artists, being listed. I meant that if David Bowie lasted 2 years after reaching fame....like Johnny....it would be 1970-1971. And by that time, Bowie hadn't reached his height as a performer....at ALL!
Johnny Rotten....f*uckin awesome frontman - but the pale re-reliving of the past that started in 1996 is not even taken in consideration of placing him on this list....
in other words:
-Rotten did a f*ckin incredible job in 76-78.
- Bowie deserve a high ranking....after Jagger, Elvis and James Brown. Bowie is one of the 5 best artists ever, in my opinion - might even say one of the "3 best"

guitarman53 Hi Erik Snow.
Bowie reached a lot more fame since then, today he's probably a retired rock star living in New York, helping his daughter grow up, his effect in rock 'N' roll will never be forgotten, but he was one of the best showman I've ever seen, very smart, & could he ever command an audience! he was totally original, in '76, when everybody had long hair & jeans, Bowie came on like a '40's entertainer, like a Frank Sinatra, & that was unheard of in Rock 'N' Roll, no other rock star ever tried that before, with a suit & foreda hat.
31st August 2007 09:29 PM
glencar Certainly Daltrey doesn't belong on that list now but he had his prime & when he was in it, he was a firm #2.

I seen Bowie at Maple Leaf Gardens, early '76, on the Station To Station tour, fantastic show! it was also called The Thin white duke tour, I've got all kinds of DVD's of bootlegs of Bowie from that period.

BS--Bryan Ferry was gettin' classically stylish LONG before Bowie copied him....

your right about that, but Bowie gets more attention then Bryan Ferry, he got more press, in the early 70's, Bowie was like beatlemania in England.

Ten Thousand Motels A few honorable mentions.

Mitch Ryder
John Kay
Gibbons/Hill
Ian Gillan in his heyday.

I'm not saying these guys belong in the top ten, but again Peter Wolf does. These lists you've all posted here are pretty accurate though. The fact that Mick Jagger is #1 goes without saying. That's written in stone...so to speak.
