Topic: Re-birth of the 'Stones' Return to archive

stones40 There was a time spring 1967 onwards that i honestly thought that the 'Stones had lost it with the single 'We Love You' and the album ' Their Satanic Majesties Request'
Although sales of both were good the reviews were bad,the critisism stung and it did look as if the bad boy's of R & B had lost their way in the musical jungle.
The skinny English cats were in danger of dis-appearing into oblivion and it was essential that their next single and album was top drawer.
March 15th 1968 the 'Rolling Stones' cut new material at the 'Olympic Studios' with producer Jimmy Millar.
April 28th 1968 they taped 3 promotional films for their new single.
May 12th 1968 and the 'Stones' make a surprise return to live concert with an appearance at the New Musical Express Poll Winners concert in London.
Mick Jagger said it was just like old times - infact it was better than old times. The 'Stones' are starting to gather momentum and release their new single in Britain on May 25th called 'Jumpin Jack Flash.
This thumpin earthy rock song reaches No1 in the UK on June 19th 1968.
For a while it was touch and go as JJF was only selling less than 10,000 units per day.
This was a defining point in 'Stones' history and was the re-birth of their popularity with fans.
June 22nd 1968 - A message from the 'Rolling Stones' to their fans appears in the New Musical Express pop paper 'stating Dear readers of NME Jumpin Jack Flash is really gassed that he made No1 and so are the 'Stones' Thank You we are slaving over a hot album and that album called 'Beggars Banquet'was another defining point in 'Rolling Stones' hisory.
The 'Stones' emerged from their musically slump of spring 1967 onwards to write & record the songs which allowed them to become known as the 'Greatest Rock & Roll band of all time.

JOHNNYSTONED YOU THINK DANDELION/WE LOVE YOU WAS A SLUMP?
IT MAY NOT HAVE SOLD AS WELL BUT THEY WERE 2 OF THEIR MOST CREATIVE SONGS. SATANIC MAJESTIES WAS GREAT TOO.

Half great. Love the singles. I still think Dandelion was about cocaine.

"One o'clock, two o'clock, three o'clock, four o'clock, five/Dandy lines don't care about the time."

That about sums up my college career.

I agree with you about Dandelion and We Love You being a high point creatively, but in terms of sales and chart positions, the whole of 1967 was a slump for The Stones. In actual fact, so was 1966 compared to the two previous years. It wouldn’t of been evident to most as the Stones were still hugely popular and making the top ten with every release, but the decline was very much noticeable to them.
