The Beatles: for Grown-Ups?

Reader Jon Watson asks: “why is there is so little coverage of the Beatles on Music for Grown-Ups?”

We largely ignore the Beatles for the same reason that we avoid Queen, U2, Elton John.. and a cast of poprock thousands: they don’t meet the criteria outlined in the Music for Grown-Ups Manifesto (link at the top of the page).

The first two UK Beatles albums, Please Please Me, and With The Beatles, mainly black pop covers, are splendid – so challenging and refreshing on first release that they might as well have come from Mars. The inspired production has ensured that they still sound as thrillingly fresh as did on first hearing. The harmonies (reminiscent of the Everly Brothers) are striking. If they'd produced many other albums that strong, the Beatles would have been central musicians for grown-ups.

Unfortunately, Lennon and McCartney then discovered how to write pop songs. With a string of self-regarding albums, and songs often anchored in playground lyrics, the Beatles’s art became less and less relevant to grown-up listeners. While many of the poprock majors kept close to rock ‘n’ roll’s blues roots, the Beatles, instead, turned into a pastiche of English music hall variety entertainment.

The Beatles are universally popular. Anyone – especially non-English speaking adolescents - can sing along to their songs. But they are rarely played in this parish (unlike the revered Stones catalogue).

Music for Grown-Ups would, of course, be pleased to publish contrary views - as long as they’re not offensive or abusive…
