Topic: Westerberg and Keith - a near-miss in '02 Return to archive
September 2nd, 2004 01:29 PM
Mel Belli Found this old interview (link here: http://www.writegrrrl.com/paul_qanda.html) with Paul Westerberg. Seems Paul was looking to playing w/ Keith on Letterman. That would've been outstanding.

It didn't happen, obviously, but Paul's comments shed some light on what Keith was up to in the run-up to the Licks tour.

Are we ever gonna hear the fruits of all that songwriting Keith has allegedly done in his basement?

------------

Are you doing Letterman with a band?

PW: I've been calling all kinds of guys. It's going to be Michael Bland and Jimmy Anton in the rhythm section and I talked to one guy today and invited him to be the guitar player and I'm still holding out for Keith Richards. It's not out of the question. But you can't write that because if it doesn't come true …but just watch.

First reaction when someone asked me what the Grandpaboy record sounded like - I thought, it's kind of like "Paul and the Expensive Winos". It had that - It has a different feel to it.

PW: It's two-fold. The thing is in mono for one, you listen to Stones records and a lot of things are in mono - I bought an old 330 hollow body that I've always wanted to get and that's what gives it that real honkey sound. The problem is all the songs are open tuning so I can't play any of the solos - it's like what in the world. It's me imitating Keith. It's like asking Keith "would you come play me imitating you?" Because he's there. He's in New York writing songs - he's there with Charley Drayton writing songs. And Michael Blande is good friends with Charley Drayton and I play with Charley Drayton and he's mad at Mick for doing the movie and the Lenny Kravitz thing - he's not going to do a record. He's going to do one last record and then the band is going to be over. And then there's this whole thing with Ron Wood - he's dying. He's concerned. There's been communication. There's a one-in-10 chance rather than a one-in-zillion chance.

Saint Sway a couple of thoughts... first, I think it would be cool as shit to hear Westerberg collaborate with Keef. Might also be kinda weird since he's basically a poor mans Keef. But the Keith Clone thing worked out well on the early Ronnie Wood records IMO

but whether or not they ever work together isnt really important. Whats important is that Keith put out some new solo material. If hes actually writing with Charley Drayton then thats fuckin awesome bc Draytons a bad ass mofo. But it sounds like then, and still now, that Keith needs to focus and say 'OK this is what I'm gonna do' and then follow thru and do it. It seems over the last years that he's been keeping busy between Stones gigs with a lot of half assed projects that never see the light of day. Thats all fine for staying sharp but he could just as easily focus and bang something out.

I'm kinda sour right now as far as hopes for anything kick ass to come out of the Stones camp because I think Mick is just out of touch and too controlling. But a keith solo cd or ep could kick serious ass!!!!

Maybe he could do a collaboration type record with Westerberg and a bunch of other Keith inspired artists. Something along the lines of that Santana album - except cool and Keef worthy.

Soldatti Thanks for the story Mel Belli.

Gazza I've heard a lot about this guy Westerberg from some of you folks but have to say I'm still pretty much unexposed to his music

Going by the sort of music I tend to listen to, I suppose he's someone I may like.

For those of you who are fans, what would you recommend I start on and could you give me a list of some of his best SONGS...and I'll maybe download a few first to check them out

Mandrax My take on that:

Keith never wrote with Drayton, only Steve Jordan; BTW, Keith had a falling out w/Drayton in '93 when Drayton was unable to tour with the Wino's due to previous commitments(what the hell could be more important than a Wino's tour?)
he was replace by Jerome Smith....the Winos were not the same without the Jordan/Drayton versatility/telepathy...

Mel Belli Gazza - The best place to start for Westerberg is the Replacements' meatiest albums - "Hootenany"; (the sublimely named)"Let It Be"; "Tim" and "Pleased to Meet Me."

For individual downloads, try "I Will Dare," "Waitress in the Sky," "Take Me to Down to the Hospital"; "My Favorite Thing"; "Can't Hardly Wait"...

Westerberg went solo in the early '90s, and I don't think he hit his stride until the last five years. The album "Suicaine Gratification" - co-produced by Don Was, incidentally - is brilliant all the way through.

The best of the lot, I think, are the guerilla solo albums -- "Stereo/Mono" from 2002, last year's "Come Feel Me Tremble" and the forthcoming "Folker," each of which he recorded on his own and played all the instruments.

Check out the songs "Wild and Lethal," "Dirty Diesel," "I'd Do Anything" - Stonesy ingredients are very strong. Also, try a song called "Don't Want Never"; it's a haunting little piece of magic.

Drayton had some co-writing credits on stuff like "Bodytalks" and most notably "Wicked As It Seems".

I've talked to Drayton about why he left the band. Drayton quit the Wino's mid Main Offender Tour because of problems he was having with one of the band members. Specifically Steve Jordan. They were long time friends but had a real falling out and still do not talk to this day. Charley does keep in contact with Keith and Ivan Neville. As does Steve, who has performed live with Keith on quite a few occassions in the past year.

recently Charley Drayton has been touring on drums with Michelle Branch and has been touring on and off with Hiram Bullock Band. If your lucky, you may of may of caught him over the past 2 years doing one of his very rare gigs with the super group "Peaceful Kneival". Peaceful Knieval is made up of Charley Drayton on drums along with members of The Black Crowes, Govt Mule, Screamin Cheetah Wheelies and Lenny Kravitz band. They do kick ass sets of mostly covers.

Busch1 This would be a dream, Keith and Paul. Christ, my two heroes!! That might be better than another Stones tour.
Gazza, as far as what to check out with Westerberg, the compliation, "All For One, Nothing For All," a 2-CD set with four songs each off their last four albums and another CD of outtakes is a good place to start. Also, grab ANYTHING live you can find. They were drunk, sloppy, but brilliant. His solo stuff, I think, is every bit as good a collection now, 10 years deep. As far as songs, here's a few (it's hard to pare down).

REPLACEMENTS: Color Me Impressed, Customer, Treatment Bound, Waitress in the Sky, Bastards of Young, Left of the Dial, Here Comes A Regular, Swingin' Party, IOU, Can't Hardly Wait, Alex Chilton, I'll Be You, Achin' To Be, Nobody, Someone Take The Wheel. I know I'm leaving some stuff out, but that's a start.

SOLO WESTERBERG: Knockin' On Mine, World Class Fad, Silver Naked Ladies, Black-eyed Susan, Men Without Ties, Copenhagen, Love Untold, If Only You Were Lonely, Ain't Got Me, Wonderful Lie, Fugitive Kind, Let's Not Belong Together, High Time, Kickin' The Stall, Silent Film Star, Making Me Go, What A Day For A Night, Everything Goes Wrong, Wild and Lethal, Crackle And Drag (rocker and acoustic version).

That's the SHORT list. This guy is nothing short of great. He's the one who picked up where the Stones left off, it's just that not enough people were told about it. It's ashame that the climate wasn't there anymore for a truly great rock 'n' roll band like the Replacements to take off in the 80s. Instead, we got shit like Poison, Def Leppard, Motley Crue and the like shoved down our throats. Westerberg actually developed as a rocker, songwriter and musician without losing his edge (sound familiar?). The problem was, unlike with the Stones when they were starting out, record companies no longer had the patience or smarts to stick with a guy like this, mainly because he wasn't mainstream enough. Like with the Stones, I think the mainstream would have come to him, but he just wasn't given a chance in the modern era of the music business. Thankfully, he's still going and has a big enough fan base to keep the dream alive!

Make It Funky FYI: to those music junkies, I recently purchased the 1978 Warren Zevon release, "Excitable Boy" and it was produced by both Jackson Browne and Waddy Wachtel!! Other songs are "Werewolves..." "Lawyers, Guns & Money" and "Nighttime in the Switching Yard" to name but a few classics.

What ever happened to W.W. and his porn charges a while back?
