caro Spooky indeed. In his book "Rock Dreams", Peellaert painted Mick&Keith in nazi uniforms, as far as I remember. So probably the idea comes from him, but I dunno. There are also pics from that time period where Keith 's wearing a swastika necklace. But I thought that at least Mick had stopped playing with that kind of imagery by the end of the sixties...

L&A You have to check the site from the Belgian artist
www.guypeellaert.com
Lots of press releases explaining the origine of the cover.

From Interview, Jan 1977:
...
SD:"What gave you the idea for the cover of the Stones album ?"
GP:"They invited me to do it during the tour in Europe. They originally wanted to have the sleeve for a "Live" album. So, because the main part of the tour was in Germany, I was thinking about scenery there, the old fascist stairs."
SD:"Is there a certain place that has stairs like that?"
GP:"All over Germany."
SD:"Did you get the Stones to pose like that?"
GP:"No, they just sent me a few contacts with the faces."

Gazza I've never seen that Nazi/IORR thing before...that's amazing!

The similarities in poses and layout are remarkable , not to mention the significance of the people in each corresponding picture - ie, Hitler in front and his no.2 (Rudolph Hess) just behind him to the right in the same positions that Mick and HIS "second in command" are in on the IORR cover!

The weird thing is that there are more people doing Nazi-style salutes on the Stones cover than the Hitler pic!

And this?

For solo albums Keith's Main Offender and Mick's Wandering Spirit are the best...
