I also always liked the Metamorphosis cover. Taylor and Jones on the same LP cover.

L&A The Best:
1. Sticky Fingers
2. Out of our heads UK
3. Beggars Banquet (censored)
4. Exile
5. Some girls
6. Goat's Head Soup
7. Flashpoint (the only well designed for the small size of a CD cover, imo)
8. Black and blue

The Worst:
Tatoo You, Steel Wheels, Still Life, No Security
August 25th, 2004 04:05 AM
IanBillen
1. SOME GIRLS
2. STICKY FINGERS
3. TATTOO YOU
4. BETWEEN THE BUTTONS
5. UNDERCOVER
6. BEGGARS BANQUET (graffiti issue)
7. BLACK AND BLUE
8. ITS ONLY ROCK N ROLL
9. ORGINAL EXILE ON MAIN STREET
10. STEEL WHEELS (for what it was with the tour and all)

Worst are irty Work, No Security, Emotional Resque, Let it Bleed (I realize I will probably be raked over the coals for this one but although it is truly a total classic album I always thought the cover was stupid....even though it is supposed to be)
August 25th, 2004 06:44 AM
bez85 Satanic Majesty 3D cover was cool..
August 25th, 2004 07:38 AM
Gazza 1. Some Girls (original pre-censored vinyl version)
2. Exile
3. Sticky Fingers (LP version with zipper)
4. Black and Blue (LP gatefold sleeve)
5. Decembers Children/Out of our heads
6. Ya Ya's
7. Satanic majesties (3d)
8. IORR
9. Beggars Banquet (bog wall cover)

Almost all the album covers up to about 1978 were pretty good. Since then, most have been mediocre. There's a message in there somewhere.

My favourite 3 Stones albums are also the ones with the best covers, oddly enough. Plus, the only Stones live album in the list is IMO far and away their best live release.

worst (in no particular order)
All of the post 1971 live albums (apart from Stripped, and especially LYL and No Security)
any compilation from the post-1971 era (except Time Waits for No One and 40 Licks)

and Ian, you're right about Let It Bleed, as far as I'm concerned. Like Satanic Majesties - but for opposite reasons - the quality of the album cover is inversely proprtional to the quality of the musical content contained inside.

Bloozehound Reminds me of something I saw at Shidoobee a while back, it was posted by MOWAT. There's other sections of covers at the top, check it out.

F505 Ofcourse we are talking about LP versions and not these ugly cd's!!
August 25th, 2004 06:11 PM
Bloozehound Jamming with Edward is the greatest cover! Not really.

Pics of the artist or group on the cover have never appealed to me unless it's their first album or it's done in an extremely artistic manner.

Most of the Stones first few album covers are a bit monotonous, really just the same reheated glamor shot. Of coarse the Beatles albums were similar, but maybe a bit more adventurous.

Notable early exceptions...

NOW! (great, stark B&W contrast, and 60's cut-away schtick. Contrast is indicative of these bold white boys doing thier black, bluesy best on this scorchin' hot set of southern fried R&B and blues)

Decembers Children (menacing & cool),

Aftermath (UK version, stark & grim = very cool).

BB - I believe was only available in a white cover for a while ? The bathroom concept seems to be the beginning of a theme that transpires on the covers of next 3 masterpieces, which included images of decadent, misfit, street suavvy coolness. BTW great pic inside of the band.

LIB - I dunno guys, both sides have to be taken into account, it's one of those before & after deals. The party just started on the front, and the aftermath of the wreckage is on the back, like a crossfire hurricane erupted once that needle hit the groove. It's kinda adolescent, but this is a rock n roll record were talking about here. Definitely some wildass, hurricane force, whirlwind-tunes permeating off that sonna bitch.

My vote goes to either Sticky Fingers or Exile as best Stones album cover. Both covers were totally groundbreaking and edgy, not to mention memorable, plus symbolic of the themes and attitude of the music contained on each album, plus exile has Pako Gerte.

Black n Blue is very, very cool and refreshing. Turned out much better than the original idea with the chick tied up.

Some Girls is really cool too, but in light of the Exile & ER collages that preceded it, it's just not as earth shattering original.

There's a few other good ones, but most of the rest studio, live, compilation-wise are no big deal IMO

*No Security's cover was so dumb it prevented me from purchasing it when it first came out.

Soldatti and talking about covers, I have a doubt from years:
What is the story of the IORR cover art?
What about this, a real connection?

egon Sticky fingers (the original album with real zipper).

Worste is probably B to B.
That lion looks very very cheap (made on a home computer????)
Looks very bad as t-shirt as well, and would be a good candidate for the "bootleg t-shirts" thread.
(if it wasn't so official!)

Ten Thousand Motels The obsession with lists continues huh?

It's too early in the morning to have to think but here goes.

Exile
Iorr
Sticky Fingers
Goats Head Soup
Black & Blue

There, that's enough thinking for me today. Now back to my regularly scheduled & relaxing vegetive state.

Bloozehound whoa interesting

check out how the first 5 rows or so are lined up almost identically coming down the stairs. Look at their poses, and arm, leg and feet positions.

Soldatti, did you come up with this yourself ?

Amazing find Soldatti! The similarities are too strong to be just coincidental.

I wonder if it was some designer's idea or has anything to do with Keith's obsession with WWII and all. Speaking of which, I've been reading Christofer Sandford's book on Keith, and he makes some references on his (Keith's, that is) habit to dress up in nazi uniforms etc. Do we know if there's any credibility to that? I thought his interest had more to do with collecting stuff regarding WWII.
