THE BOOGIE NEVER DIES

"With Vince Converse on guitar, the session reached new levels of fabulously loud and slamming guitar riffs, driving the crowd into a dancing and screaming frenzy. Guitars were the centerpiece of the night - appropriately given that was Hooker's instrument of choice." ..Simone Haas - Oakland Tribune:

The Boogie Never Dies

What do John Lee Hooker, The Fillmore auditorium in San Francisco and Blue Storm Musics tribute to John Lee Hooker have in common? The answer is the BluesJohn Lee played it, The Fillmore was where he played it and our tribute to Mr. Hooker, aka The Boogie Man, presents it. Thursday, August 22, was not only the date of John Lee Hookers birthday, it was, by official proclamation of Mayor Willie Brown, John Lee Hooker Day in San Francisco. The date also marked the opening of The John Lee Hooker Foundation, a public, non-profit organization dedicated to teaching underprivileged youth in the Bay area about the power of music.

On Saturday night the foundation presented the first of what is planned to be an annual family birthday charity concert. Blue Storm Music has been working closely with the Foundation from its inception and a portion of the sales of the September 24 release of From Clarksdale To HeavenRemembering John Lee Hooker will be donated to it.

The evening opened with a spiritual sung by Chris James and The Natural Four, which they had sung at John Lees funeral. They were followed by Narada Michael Walden, featuring Vince Converse from LLC on guitar. Burning versions of Purple Haze and Dimples set the tone for the evening. Vince Converse tayed on stage, where he was joined by the legendary Cream lyricist (and producer of Blue Storm Musics tribute to John Lee Hooker) Pete Brown on percussion, Johnny Ace on bass, and Ron Thompson on guitar. Little Wheel and Politician raised the roof before Vince blew it completely off with a stunning 11-minute version of Bad Like Jesse James, the track LLC performed on the tribute. Other performers included Canned Heat, Greggs Eggs (who also appear on the tribute CD), Alvin Youngblood-Hart, Big Head Todd And The Monsters, Peter Green (also on the tribute CD) and John Lees daughter Zakiya Hooker. The evening came to a thunderous end with a jam that started as The Boogie and ended 25 minutes later with six guitarists, two keyboard players, two bass players and singers galore. It was a night to rememberand to celebrate. Zakiya Hooker perhaps summed up the spirit of the evening best when she said, We are here to rock and party because thats how my daddy would have wanted it.
