the kinks!

how could i forget??

"victoria" is one of the best rockers ever in my opinion. right up there with JJF...although i've never been able to understand the words...

I agree!!! Victoria is such a fun song & what a great album & words:

Long ago life was clean
Sex was bad and obscene
And the rich were so mean
Stately homes for the Lords
Croquet lawns, village greens
Victoria was my queen
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria

I was born, lucky me
In a land that I love
Though I am poor, I am free
When I grow I shall fight
For this land I shall die
Let her sun never set
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, toria

Land of hope and gloria
Land of my Victoria
Land of hope and gloria
Land of my Victoria
Victoria, 'toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria

Canada to India
Australia to Cornwall
Singapore to Hong Kong
From the West to the East
From the rich to the poor
Victoria loved them all
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria

If you have any other kinky desires this is a great site...

Yeah, those were happy times, weren't they? Much simpler. I remember the first time I heard Cherub Rock. Blew me away. The guitar solo in that song is a thing of great beauty.

pdog I'm trying to think of albums you may not have already...

Hellacopters - By The Grace Of God
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
Rainy Day Saints - Saturdays Haze

Submitted for your pleasure, and hers!

Saint Sway I agree with the Dylan choices. Only I skipped listing them bc even though Bobs one of my heroes hes more folk than R&R. I dunno, you could make a case for it but its so hard to pick 5, so I'm sticking with my reason.

And I didnt mention Rush or Yes because they also arent R&R and, more importantly, they blow.

The Black Crowes - tie - Amorica / Southern Harmony & Musical Companion
Derek & Dominoes - Layla & other assorted love songs
The Faces - A Nod Is As Good As A Wink
The Who - Who's Next
Neil Young - After The Gold Rush

"recent" honorable mentions that need to perculate and stand the test of time: White Stripes "De Stilj", Ryan Adams "Gold", Wilco "Being There", Jayhawks "Hollywood Town Hall", Kings Of Leon "Youth & Young Manhood"

Agreed. And Stevie is (well, was) awesome too. Have all his albums too. Got to know his work through an old boyfriend. The only positive thing he ultimately attributed to my life .

Riffhard Beatles-Revolver/The White Album/Rubber Soul/Sgt. Peppers

Bob Dylan-Love and Theft/Time Out of Mind/Hwy 61 Revisited/Bringin' it All Back Home/..........

The Who-Who's Next/Quadrophenia/Tommy/Live at Leeds

Van Morrison-Astral Weeks/Moondance/His band and the Street Choir/.....

The Clash-London Calling

John Lee Hooker-The Healer/Mr. Lucky

John Prine-Prime Prine(yeah,it's a greatest hits,but it's all so killer!)

In no particular order.

Bro,there is no way in hell that I could give my five favorite non-Stones' albums. Shit,on any given day they change. For that matter I'd have a tough time giving my five favorite Stones' albums, but I can damn well promiss you that Exile will always be #1 with a bullet. Exile On Main Street is quite simply the greatest album ever released by any artist period, ever, and forever. The Black Crowes would sell their collective souls to write an album even half as could as Exile. Ain't gonna happen. Ever.

Shit I forgot all about The Faces!! I love The Faces. They may have been a Stones' cover band, but they actully got it right! Unlike all the other pretenders. The Faces could really bring it! Piss, vinegar, and a swagger that has eluded all other piss and vinegar type rock and roll bands. I like the Black Crowes, but they could not hold candle to the band that they have tried so hard to emulate all these years. The Faces got much closer to the real spirit of the debauchery and hell raising ways that made the Stones so real and vital.

So having said that.....

The Faces-A Nods as Good as a Wink to a Blind Horse/Ooh La La

Sway, It's only Prog Rock, but I Like it!

You know I'm guilty of the prog thing, but you're right, on a stricly rock and roll list it seems out of place.

By the way, I'm not familiar with Kings Of Leon! If you dig them they're probably someone I should check out.

joey...i picked up "the who sell out" and thought of you.

the album is confusing! what's up with all the "what's for tea?" and "sunday monday tuesday" crapola? just play the f#$@ing track!

Radio jingles! The Who Sell Out is a tribute to the pirate radio stations in the UK back in the 60s when (correct me if I'm wrong Brits) the BBC had a monopoly on the airwavesand would only play crap like Mantovanni. The pirate stations were important exposure for "indy" type bands like the early Who. Those bits are mock commercials on the mock station. "What's for tea?" is a common British expression because"tea" is actually a little meal at 4 p.m., not just the beverage. that bit is an "ad" for Heinz Baked Beans. The commercials peter out on side 2 though.

As for other albums, go for

Pink Floyd - Obscured By Clouds
Cream - Fresh Cream
Flying Burrito Brothers - Gilded Palace of Sin
Butterfield Blues Band - East-West
Grateful Dead - Live/Dead
Kinks - Muswell Hillbillies

Alot of bands that stick around usually make their "Exile" type album. For SY, I would say this was theirs. Funny, I was slightly dissapointed by it when it came out. Although years later it get's more play than any other record I own by them and I have a few of theirs. I didn't get Exile for years, although i first heard when i was 14. SMU was more for me then, EOMS got me when i was bit older and realized I didn't know it all anymore!
Sister is also very good, IMO...
September 7th, 2005 05:29 AM
Honky Tonk Man In no particular order...

1 Revolver - The Beatles
2 The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
3 Definetly Maybe - Oasis
4 The Holy Bible - The Manic Street Preachers
5 Up The Bracket - The Libertines

I'll look at this list another time and probably hate it, but these are the records I can think of at the moment.
