Riffhard ....has anybody else read the top 100 guitarists list that RollingStone magazine has just published?!?! These stupid lists are always subjective ofcourse, and RolligStone hasn't had any credibility for decades now,but they really shit the bed with this list!

A few examples-Kurt Cobain comes in at #12 while Mick Taylor is not even on the list. Jack White came in at #17, and Neil Young at #83,Dave Gilmor #82,and Hubert Sumlin at #65! Hell, Johnny Ramone is at #16 while Pete Townshend only garners a pathetic #50. Which,by the way is two places behind #48,Joe Perry!

Now I like Jack White, and the White Stripes are one of the few decent new bands out there right now,but I think even Jack himself whould laugh his ass off at this list! When was Kurt Cobain ever considered a guitar hero? Certainly not in his short lifetime.

This is further proof,as if anymore was needed, that RS is pure shite these days. Last weeks cover featured those rock and roll icons, the Olsen twins!

I know I'm venting and that everyone knows that this rag is just that, but I've received so many calls about this ridiculous list while I'm on the air that I just had to share it with my RO pals.

Disscuss.....

Riffhard

PS-Hey Joey, you may be intrested to know that Walter Becker did not make the list either! Keith came in at #10.
09-03-03 05:11 PM
steel driving hammer I think you have to read the list from the bottoms up.
09-03-03 05:33 PM
Sir Stonesalot Really SDH....so Keef comes in a #90?

The proper way to read that list is how I did it...and that's not at all.

Well apparently you did read it because you got the 90.

I thought it was just a top 10 list since I just read the headline.

BAMM!

Well said. I'm sure the real list was placed on the editor's desk where it was quickly shit canned in order to appeal to the magazine's advertising demographics. Must sell copy first and foremost.

I think RO should start its own rock rag, a real underground press type publication. Christ knows there's enough talent here.

Riffhard Well Joey,I'll say this Steely Dan are very talented and quite proficient at their craft. They are also the most pretentious fucking band that I have ever seen live. The good news for Steely Dan is that they are only half has pretentious as their brie eating, chardonay drinking fans.

I may as well packed a bowl, cracked a beer and put on Pretzel Logic on my CD player. I would have had a better time! Many in the crowd(PNC Bank Arts Center,Holmdel NJ.,not Jones Beach)were just so goddamned arrogant and full of themselves that I literally left a good half an hour before the show ended. I wore a Keith shirt and caught hell for it while waiting in the beer line!?! "You like the Stones huh?" "Yes"says I."Well your gonna see some REAL musicians tonight." I almost spit out my beer! I proceeded to tell this escargott slurpping fuck that I was more into,"Return to Forever, with Al DeMiola,Chick Corea,Stanly Clark, and Lenny White, but as I got my tickets free from my radio station I figured, what the fuck? Why not go for the nolstagia factor" At which point he almost spit out his merlot. He then tried to explain the technical prowess of Donald Fagan and Walter Becker, and that when they were "on" and that noone comes close to their muscianship, and certainly not the Stones. At which point I belched in his face and ordered another beer. Then I walked away leaving him to stew in my jucies as it were!

So,yes Joey they pretty good. They sounded exactly like their records but with more pretentiousness and less soul.

I guess I'm just a piss and vinegar loving rock and roller! I gots no time for pretense! They do make shooting up sound quite appealing and chic on Chase the Dragon though.

Sir Stonesalot >Well apparently you did read it because you got the 90.<

I didn't read the list...I read Riffhard's initial post. I think if you concentrate real hard you may be able to figure out that Riffy stated that Keith came in at #10.

I did the math all by myself...no calculator or anything.

Why do you even try to get one up on me? You can't fight a battle of wits while you are unarmed.

How was Amsterdam? How much is the poonie going for nowadays?
09-03-03 09:18 PM
Sir Stonesalot Oh geez Riffy!

Your Dan post made me laugh REAL hard.

Piss & Vinegar baby. That be why I luv ya (in a very heterosexual, firm handshake, hearty back slap, brothers in rawkenrawl kind of way).

I never understood that whole lite jazz rock easy listening old people schmaltz that is "The Dan". Fuckin' puts me to sleep.

Why, WHY must you make Joey cry and shit liquid? WHY??

09-03-03 09:45 PM
sirmoonie Great post Riffy! Cracked me up.

Poor Joey and his love of the wretched Steely Dan. YIKES!

That RS list was actually pretty interesting. The rankings of some guitarists was definately fucked up, but they had a lot of choices that probably had most RS readers scratching their heads as to who they were.

BTW, No. 1 was Jimi and the blurb was written by Townshend.
09-03-03 11:17 PM
steel driving hammer Poonie or Sirmoonie?

The Poonie, I never even got any there.

You don't understand the drugs I did there.

I sometimes still wake up w/ a hard on but I don't remember having any over there.

I'm still trying to the find the right creme for my needle shot.

The rock and roll drug life style is just too deep for me baby.

If I won the lottery, I would probably die over there.

Thats why I need to get out now, I've had enough of drugs.
I would of had a better time if I went w/ my imaginary wife and just went in the museums and river rides.

Riffhard Joey,Joey,Joey, Don't get me wrong I like Steely Dan to listen on occassion. I just don't like the nose in the air attitude that I felt when I saw them live.

As I said it was even more obvious from their fans. At least at the show I attended. More than a few of these quiche and petit four munching pricks treated my wife and I like "uneducated rock and rollers". As if we were not able to grasp the subtleties that are so evident at a "Dan" show. The sheer complexity of their sonic marvals was lost on us,or so they would have had us beleive.

I found their arrogance astounding. Especially when you consider that many in attendance seemed to think that the height of cool was wearing knee length argile socks, bermuda shorts, and botton down long sleeved polo shirts.

In other words. It was not a rock and roll show so much as it was a meet and greet for a bunch of wannabe socity types that were under the delusion that their attendance at a Steely Dan show would give them some sort of cache in the cool department.

I know cool. The Stones are cool. Stones fans are cool, and Steely Dan are not the Stones. Nor are their fans cool.

You,Joey, are the exeption to that rule. However, judging from the crowd at the show I saw,you are in the minority when it comes to fans of "The Dan"

Hope that explains my position.

Riffhard

PS-We did catch Peg but,the fucks behind us kept yelling for us to sit down so it was not as enjoyable as I would have liked.

Joey " In other words. It was not a rock and roll show so much as it was a meet and greet for a bunch of wannabe socity types that were under the delusion that their attendance at a Steely Dan show would give them some sort of cache in the cool department. "

You make Joey cry and snort snot -- Why ?!?!?!

Why ?!?!?! WHY ?!?!?! Why must you make the Jercee cry so uncontrollably and violently when all he does is love ?

WHY ?!?!?!?!?!?!

**** Joey goes over to the drawer and pulls out long kitchen knife and prepares to commit Hari Kari ( Harry Carey ) ******

" I know cool. The Stones are cool. Stones fans are cool, and Steely Dan are not the Stones. Nor are their fans cool. "

**** Sound of young Jersee writing out last will and testament ( everything goes to the Keith Moon School of Heavy Drinking ) *************

" You,Joey, are the exeption to that rule. However, judging from the crowd at the show I saw,you are in the minority when it comes to fans of "The Dan" "

Riffy , you are much loved by the Joeskee !

Joesy and the Pussycats .

Boomy It's really sad, but IMO, the "porn thing" that had Pete in the news as a bad guy dropped him down a bit.

And I will not comment on Kurt Cobain being at #12...let me just say that his drummer is way more talented.
09-04-03 05:17 PM
Sir Stonesalot See here's the trap you are all falling into.

Boomy, Kurt Cobain was the real god damn deal, babe. Should he be #12 on the all time guitar god list? I dunno, and I really don't care.

But you gotta give the guy points for popularizing the genre that killed hair metal.

And you are all assuming that it's just technical chops that places you on that list. Horse shit. I think a player that plays differently than anyone before him, that approaches music from a unique angle, that influences players who come after him, that play with heart, that play with piss & vinegar(thanks Riffy)...well I think someone like that deserves recognition just as much as Steve Vai or Eddie Van Halen. There is more to playing rock music than just chops. I'd imagine that's why Keith is ranked so high.

Besides, Rolling Stones list is meaningless. The more important list is the one formed in your own head.

Fuck Rolling Stone shitrag.
09-04-03 06:24 PM
glencar Riffhard, are you on the air in the NY area?
09-04-03 07:21 PM
Riffhard Riffhard, are you on the air in the NY area?

No Blue/glencar,I'm not on the air in NYC. I was offered a gig there but turned it down. New York is a huge market,#1 in fact, but it's not my cup of meat,so to speak. Long story.

I'm on the Jersey Shore at a station called WRAT The Rat. 95.9. If you ever get just south of the Driscoll Bridge tune us in. We kick the shit out of the NYC stations in the ratings. It's a good station with a decent mix. Some of the stuff we play I really dig. Some I don't. Everything from the Stones and Hendrix to shit like Linkin Park and Nickelback.

Hey fuck it it's a job I guess, right? Plus, the pays pretty good and there's loads of fringe benefits,ie-covering the last two Stones press conferences. I remember meeting you far too breifly at the Licks PC. You really should have come and joined SirStonesalot,FPM,and myself for some pints!! What a great Stones memory that is!

glencar Ah Riffhard, I should have stayed but I had to get to work. I was talking with someone aout going down the shore next summer. I'll keep WRAT in mind. Can I hear it on the Turnpike?
