SERIAL KILLER ON THE LOOSE

Aug 21 2004

Fears that Marsha murderer has struck again

By Jeff Edwards

A SERIAL killer is feared to be on the loose after a girl was battered to death.

Amelia Delagrange, 22, was found with horrific head injuries in Twickenham, West London.

Police linked it to the murder last year of Marsha McDonnell, 19, and two attacks in the area.

Det Chief Supt Andy Murphy said: "They may all have been committed by one person."

POLICE warned last night of a "maniac" on the loose, after his possible fourth victim was found brutally murdered.

There are uncanny similarities to all four assaults - believed to be carried out with a hammer-like metal weapon - which stretch back 19 months.

Detectives have also reopened files on two unsolved murders from the 70s in the same area of South West London.

The fourth woman targeted in the recent spate of horror was 22-year-old French national Amelia Delagrange.

Her body was found by a bar manager on a cricket pitch on Twickenham Green on Thursday night. The killer rained blows on her from behind.

Police are linking it to an attack on a 17-year-old girl in Walpole Gardens, Twickenham, on January 8, 2003.

She suffered a fractured skull, cheek bone and eye socket and has no recollection of the attack. A month later, Marsha McDonnell, a 19-year-old gap year student, was struck three times over the head after getting off a bus in nearby Hampton

The attack was so violent that people sleeping in a nearby house were woken up by the noise of the blows. She died instantly.

An 18-year old girl later told police she had been chased by a man in a hooded top in the same area an hour earlier. An E-fit of a possible suspect was later issued.

But any link to the Marsha murder is now said to be inconclusive. It was a year later, on April 18 this year, that the third victim was attacked.

A 34-year-old woman was knocked unconscious by savage blows to her head with a heavy object, after leaving Harrington's wine bar opposite Twickenham Green.

Last night Det Chief Supt Andy Murphy said: "Because of the type of attack and close geographical locations, we can't rule out all may have been committed by the same person."

None of the victims was sexually assaulted or robbed. All four cases happened late at night, with the attacker creeping up from behind and striking with a hammer, iron bar, or similar heavy metal weapon.

Like Marsha, Amelia died after catching a bus home. She had visited a wine bar with friends on Thursday evening.

Amelia, over here to learn English, was found fully clothed at about 10.30pm. She died in hospital from multiple head wounds.

A tent was erected over the edge of the cricket square where Amelia was discovered. Det Supt Murphy said: "She was killed with a blunt instrument rather than a blade or knife." A detective who worked on the Marsha case said: "It looks like we have a maniac out there who has a hate complex against young women and stalks them just to batter them to death.

"All four women suffered terrible head wounds and never saw their attacker."

Last March detectives arrested a 16-year-old boy in connection with Marsha's murder.

The teenager, who has a history of mental problems, later went to a secure psychiatric hospital, where he has been ever since.

Police have reopened files on two murders in Hounslow - two miles from Twickenham - in the mid-70s.

Lynne Weedon, 16, was attacked in a side-street in 1975 and died from multiple skull fractures inflicted with a tyre lever or similar heavy weapon.

A year later Linda Paravicinni, 27, died from savage blows to the head as she walked home from Hounslow Underground station.
