robpop In her defense, I have no idea why 1/5 of Americans cannot not find the US on a world map, or at least a reason that I can give in 30 seconds. That was a loaded question. She should have had a Paris Hilton question.

Bloozehound wonder what she would of said if they'd asked her what she thought of why 5 out of 5 beauty contestants can't give intelligent, coherent answers to beauty pagent questions

It's not that tough a question, though the reality of the answer strikes at the heart of everything this blonde bimbette believes. The simple fact is that many Americans are woefully ignorant of geography, even U.S. geography, because the subject receives insufficient attention in our schools. This ignorance applies to most of existence outside the primetime television schedule.

Too true, but the question should be why are US public schools in such horrible shape? The USA spends more on the broken public education than any other western country yet we have idiots that cannot even find the US on a map!

I'll give you a short, but very real reason. Teacher's unions.

The jinn, my friend. If most Americans were educated in geography, more Americans would begin to realize there is a world beyond America. Moreover, that might bring forth persons that would have an interest in being a good worldly neighbor. A fact is, many ethically strong people in America value being a good neighbor and a conducting forthright business affairs.

It is easier to rule an uneducated mass. In addition, adding to the lack of education, all the way through to secondary schools, when a mass is scrambling simply to survive the luxury of battling the ruling force does not become relevant until it is at a crisis level in their daily lives.

glencar Whether or not Americans are schooled in geography, they all realize there's a world outside the US. Americans are hugely charitable & our citizens visit every coner of the world. I happen to be a geography buff & I would like to see more Americans get educated in the ways of the world but I'm afraid with everything else we get taught in school, gepgraphy falls by the wayside. As for the girl in this clip? She's 15 or 16 & she was asked a question which she apparently misunderstood. Obviously her references to "the Iraq" & "US Americans" shows a lack of depth but I would also take her age into consideration.
