Topic: Nanker Phelge? Return to archive
29th August 2006 08:05 AM
mcclellan28 Anyone know where the name "Nanker Phelge" came from? What it means? If I'm not mistaken, it was used as a credit for early songs written by The Stones and manager Andrew Loog Oldham. Though, I suspect there's a bit of subtle humor there...

glencar Phelge was an early roomie of the Stones. Nanker was some British nickname & the group combined the two as a pseudonym for group songwriting credits. Jimmy Phelge later wrote an amusing book about growing up with the Stones.

Gazza a "nanker" was also what they called this face they used to pull for phographers :

and this is the legend that is James Phelge :

mcclellan28 I guess Bill Wyman explained it in his book, "Rolling With the Stones."

When the Stones cut "Stoned," Brian suggested crediting it to Nanker/Phelge. The entire band would share writing royalties.

Phelge came from Edith Grove flatmate Jimmy Phelge, while a Nanker was a revolting face that band members, Brian in particular, would pull.

I believe he ended up with a woman from there (I know the name, she was from one of the Stones boards, but wont mention it unless I'm mistaken) so I guess its possible he may have moved there. Nothing much seems to have been heard of him since his moment of fame in the late 90's

I loved that book of his. Havent read it in ages, but it's laugh-out-loud funny at times.

I saw him in London's Brixton Academy in June 1999. He was autographing his autobiography.
