Solo Performance: Like a Rolling Stone
The canvas world of Ron Wood
The Ottawa Citizen
August 28, 2005
While his lead singer, Mick Jagger, gets no satisfaction at virtually every tour stop, fulfilment for Rolling Stones' guitarist Ronnie Wood, is as close as his box of paints.
It's there, amidst oil and canvas, Wood enters his other world -- as a solo artist. But this world-renowned rocker is no Sunday afternoon painter.
Ron Wood, the musician is also Ron Wood, formally trained artist. And his art, much of it of fellow band members, Keith Richards, Jagger and Charlie Watts, but also of others, such as Bob Dylan, John Belushi, Alfred Hitchcock and even his wife, Josephine, has in just a few years taken on a life of its own.
Art exhibitions of Wood's work have been held on two continents to huge success. In conjunction with today's Stones' concert in Ottawa, Wood's art is being shown here by Klim Art Galleries, of Toronto.
A free exhibition of original lithographs, silk screens and etchings, all signed by the artist, opened Thursday and continues today and Monday at the Ottawa Congress Centre (Capital Hall 3b; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., today; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. tomorrow). All the works are for sale.
Wood, who worked as a commercial artist before entering the music business in 1967, and who always takes his brushes and paints on tour, says "there's no therapy like starting and seeing a picture through."
"Unlike music," he says, "it's a solo effort, no one else to blame. But then again, no one gets the satisfaction out of it."
Inspiration comes to Wood often late at night. He'll leap out of bed to put his thoughts down on paper. A selection of works can be viewed on Klim's website: www.klimart.com |
