Just thought it was funny that the 'Legends of Punk' will soon be playing in Las Vegas. God isn't it funny how Johnny Rotten slagged off the Stones in the 70's, and yet his band has turned into some kind of post-punk cabaret act!! I'm sorry, but I find the prospect of a bunch of fat 40-year old sex pistols fans with safety pins through their noses ridiculous. Gimme Stones fans any day. They look more like Vietnam Vets....
08-23-03 02:08 PM
Sir Stonesalot Yeah, it's easy to slag on the Pistols when you don't have a clue.

I'm not fat, I'm not 40, and I don't have any body part pierced. I'll see the Pistols at the 9:30 Club tomorrow night.

When the Sex Pistols were busy saving rock and roll in the late 70's, THEY DIDN'T GET PAID. They were one of the most famous bands on the planet, and they could barely afford enough food to live on. They lived in squats or squalid flats. Lots of people made lots of money off of the Sex Pistols...unfortunately, it wasn't anyone IN the band.

Now...you want to deny these guys their payday? Fuck you. They deserve every penny they make, and I'm happy to give them some of my money.

Wow, that's so .... Punk man!!! All i was saying is that Johnny Rotten had some gall to slag off those bands, when his band has obviously bowed to comercial interests. At least the Stones are honest about their sponsership deals, etc.
08-23-03 03:26 PM
Sir Stonesalot Uhhh...ask ANY of the people involved in the original punk movement...they ALL wanted to get paid. They ALL wanted to be superstars. Yes they wanted to change the world, but they also wanted to GET PAID.

Money has NEVER been anathema to punks, and anyone who thinks otherwise has no idea what they are talking about.
08-23-03 03:40 PM
hotlicks All right, let's get this straight.. I'm not against ANY band making a few bob, and I'm not anti-punk. I just think they are hypocrites of the highest order. I'm old enough to remember how they slagged off the Stones, and I'm also old enough to remember the night at the 101 club when the Clash, true rock gods that they are, blew them off the fucking stage....I was there MANNNNNNN!!!!!

What?? Hey, criticize all you want, but at least get yer facts straight. In 1976 they consisted of Johnny (Rotten)Lydon, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock. Matlock was fired and replaced by the talentless Sid Vicious, who died in 1979 of a drug overdose. The band reconvened for the first time in '96, and then as now they are back to the original line-up of Lydon, Cook, Jones & Matlock. That makes fewer personnel changes than the Rolling Stones, by my count.

And who the hell thinks they're getting RICH on this tour? They're doing either 10 or 11 dates, mostly theaters and ballrooms. No repackaged greatest hits albums, no new album, just a great band playing one of the top ten greatest rock albums EVER, live in its entirety. What the hell is there to bitch about?

Oh, yeah, they slagged the Stones in the 70s. Well, maybe they listened to the first 3 sides of Love You Live. That was the current Stones album when they hit big, and it deserves slagging. The Stones' rebirth in '78 has more than a little to do with Mick's reaction to the Pistols.

Oh, well, if we're comparing the Pistols to the CLASH, there's no comparison. The Clash at their height would've blown any band on the planet off the stage. UNFORTUNATELY the Clash are not touring this summer or any summer. The Pistols are.

By the way, if you were really at the 101 Club that night, you are my hero.

sammy davis jr. I'll cry for the poor old Sex Pistols.... ahhh fuck 'em.
08-24-03 02:26 AM
beer My dad bought me "Never mind the Bullocks" when i was ten years old. i still have that cassette. i love the pistols, though they are not one of my favorite bands. They are what they are, take 'em or leave 'em. they don't care. the fact is: they were vitally important to Rock and roll. Very much so. I cant emphasize this enough. Same with the Ramones.

"Keith is the original punk rocker. Nobody can out-punk Keith." -Mick Jagger

So very true.

Egbert Sex Pistols may have slagged the Stones way back when, but it was but a farce: No New York Dolls, no Pistols. No Rolling Stones, no New York Dolls. 'Nuff said.

hotlicks RIGHT ON MY FRIEND.

Busch1 I saw them in Atlantic City last night and they were damn good. Given, it was a bit weird seeing dudes in full-on 1978 punk gear, complete with the six-inch hair spikes, but it was a ton of fun. They don't have a bad song. Of course, they don't have many songs, but they played them all balls-out and with conviction. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. Sir Stonesalot and anybody else going to see them, you're in for a treat!
08-24-03 04:30 PM
stewed & Keefed Just go and see them and enjoy.......a great real band.
08-25-03 04:19 AM
FPM C10 The show was great. SS and I both got very close to the stage for the entire set (Bollocks plus "No Fun" and "Belsen Was A Gas"). I'll post a more detailed review tomorrow, unless the naysayers get their knickers in a bunch over it.

Smile! Ganesh loves us!

Mathijs As far as I am concerned, the Sex Pistols and the entire London punk movement was born out of discontent with the eshtablishment. If you're 20 years old, you don't have a job what else can you do then just drink some beers with a couple of friends and make some music. Of course they rebelled against the comtemporary bands, because they WERE god awfull. Elton John, Gary Glitter AND the Stones had become quite awfull if you are a 20 year old looking for some action. Thanks to the Pistols the Stones fired Preston and Brown and made Some Girls.

When you're 45 you don't necessarily have to agree with the idees you had when you were 20. So if the Pistols just want to have some fun AND some money, no problem to me. They have done their job and changed music forever. Thank god for that, or we still would have had Redge from Watford in a silver dress....

sandrew Stonesalot, I saw the Pistols at the 9:30 last night and was blown away. I honestly didn't feel like dragging my ass out on a Sunday night, but as soon as Lydon walked out, the place became electric. It was exhilarating.
08-25-03 03:00 PM
Busch1 Mathjis, my friend and I a similar conversation about the Pistols coming along and changing rock forever just before we went in to Saturday's show. As far as I'm concerned, the fire they lit was their biggest contribution to rock. The music itself is great, but it's more the kick in the ass they provided that has had a lasting impact.
I'm glad some others have gone out and caught their shows. I have to admit, I was skeptical at the thought of the Sex Pistols playing in a Donald Trump-owned casino, but they really rocked. Johnny was cool, kept commentary to a minimum (I liked his rant on Bush and Hussein: "You don't need EITHER of them.")
The music has stood the test of time, and they far outshine the wannabes who wear the punk label today but are really just corporate tools.
08-25-03 03:08 PM
jb They are no longer anti-establishment as they are touring for the money as well. Eventually, everyone becomes part of the establishment or dies.
08-25-03 03:18 PM
Busch1 True enough, jb. It's not so much that they're anti-establishment anymore, but they still have to sit on the sideline and watch no-talents like Blink 182 cash in while they struggle to get a thousand people in a ballroom in A.C. Not that I feel sorry for them - they've all had pretty good lives thanks to an album and a half of material. But they seem to have maintained their integrity, whether they're part of the establishment or not.

Yeah, it certainly WAS exhilarating. Where were you in the club?

What a great place that is to see bands!

Hooked I saw the Pistols last night at 930 Club also. They were awesome. Sell outs, old punkers, in it for a buck--whatever. They delivered. They played the whole Bollocks album plus a couple of others and nailed it. An hour of pure seminal punk.

I started out in the back of the club but ended up in the near/in the mosh pit by the last song, belying my age. Fun.

And the 930 club is a great venue, they do a good job. Nice layout, never too long a wait at the bar and the security is present without being obtrusive. Interestingly, i think this was the first show i've been to there where they weren't selling bottles of beer, they poured them all into cups. guess they were worried about the ghosts of punks past.

Plus, most of the others shows on the tour have been in ampitheaters, which is not the place to see the Pistols. We lucked out with the club gig.

08-25-03 10:42 PM
FPM C10 There are other reviews of the show here at Rocks Off under the thread entitled And The Crowd Went Wild. (And at a site called God Save The Sex Pistols.)I don't know why we split the thread.

Anyway, cool that you and sandrew were there too. I'm gonna remember that one a long time. Hail fellow well met!

Hooked Absotively! One of the better hours i've spent in a while. it was a slam-bam, hour-long, whirling dervish.
