I was more into the blues based bands (Stones/Yardbirds/Them/Pretty Things/Animals,etc) but the beat groups were the ones heard on the radio, all the previous groups mentioned, plus Manfred Mann, Hollies, Peter & Gordon, Nashville Teens, if nobody had a 45 chart topping song on the charts, then nobody heard of them, it was a different system back then, at least in '64. |

The Stones!!
But I like something from just about all of them. The Beatles and The Who of course stand out. You know, The Kinks are sooo under rated. I really dig a lot of their work. They seem to be fading from today's generation. |

In addition to the Stones, '60's pop/r&b groups that seemed to have aged well for me include The Pretty Things, Them & The Small Faces and The Who (the pre-Tommy stuff I'm talking about here). The Animals and The Yardbirds are historically huge but something about the production of the songs seems lacking at times -actually one had a great singer butr a so-so band (Animals), the other a great band with a so-so singer (Yardbirds). The Kinks were pretty awesome as well.
On the American side, my faves from that period include The Rascals, Paul Revere & The Raiders and The Remains (Boston's finest, there's a new best-of out on Epic/Legacy that's well worth picking up). Oh yeah, and MItch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels.
There's tons more of course but those spring to mind first.
