Tour Crews Scramble To Assemble 7-Story Stage For Stones
August 26, 2005
The monolithic seven-story stage the Rolling Stones perform is the most "expensive and extravagant stage" ever created for a stadium show, tour insiders say. Some quick facts about the stage and the tour:
The stage is 280 feet wide, 90 feet high and about 100 feet deep. The band worked with Marc Fisher to design the stage and Patrick Woodruff on the lighting. Fisher also designed the stage for Pink Floyd's "Division Bell" tour in 1994.
The steel structure takes four days to assemble, says Dale Skjerseth, the production manager. It takes 30 hours to tear it all down after the show.
There are two rotating sets of steel structure. The one in Rentschler Field will be used for the first time tonight. The one the Stones played on earlier this week in Boston is now being assembled in Ottawa, Canada, where the band plays Sunday. There are 127 trucks moving the stages around.
The tour employs 235 people, including a full-time catering staff of 15.
Planning for the tour began last December. The first shows were announced in May.
Arena dates later on the tour will have an entirely different stage set and show.
