Read some Stones chatter on a music-industry website today regarding the replacement of Bill Wyman back in the '90s. I thought this was interesting:

"On the bass front....Doug Wimbish was asked pre Daryl.....the story as I have been told by Doug and others is that Mick called Vernon Reid and offered to buy out the entire upcoming Living Colour tour to let Wimbish go with them with no ill will. When Vernon refused....Mick, not wanting to trash a touring band, withdrew the offer and went to Daryl."
