Helmut Stones' agents unimpressed with 'Angie' Merkel
23 August 2005

BERLIN - The German opposition Christian Democratic party is in trouble for apparently using the Rolling Stones song 'Angie' without permission at an election rally.

The conservative CDU party, who are widely tipped to win next month's planned German national elections, played the Rolling Stones' 1973 hit 'Angie' at an election rally in Dresden, to promote chancellor candidate Angela Merkel.

However the Rolling Stones' agents, LD Communications claim that the CDU did not ask them for permission to play the song. "We probably would have said 'no' if they had," commented the agents.

The CDU claim they do have performance rights for the song, though. "Today we got
confirmation of the performance right from Gema," a CDU spokeswoman told the BBC News website on Monday. Gema is the German music distribution rights agency.

"We will continue using the song," the spokeswoman said.

Commentators are sceptical about the appropriateness of the song, whose lyrics include lines such as "Angie, you're beautiful, but ain't it time we said good-bye?" and "All the dreams we held so close seem to all go up in smoke", for an election campaign.

glencar In the US, pols use songs all the time & there's sometimes a lil "controversy" but really, who cares? Let's hope "Angie" wins!
