JACKSON, Miss. - Sixty-three years after influential bluesman Robert Johnson died in the Mississippi Delta, his memory is being resurrected near his final resting place.

The first Robert Johnson Heritage and Blues Festival, scheduled for Saturday in Greenwood's Whittington Park, will unite blues artists from around the country on one stage.

Organizers have been planning the festival for five years, and coordinator Sylvester Hoover said he and Johnson's family worked to secure artists for the one-day event.

"Most artists we talked to, they were more than happy to perform, they wanted to," Hoover said.

Performers are expected to include Dusty Lightfoot, Tommy Johnson and former Heart guitarist Roger Fisher. Honey Boy Edwards, the last man to play with Johnson in Greenwood, also is scheduled to take the stage.

The festival was hit with controversy last month when performer Ian Osbourne withdrew from the show after being arrested in Louisiana for allegedly having an online sexual conversation with a person posing as a 14-year-old boy, according to the Baton Rouge, La., Police Department.

Hoover said Osbourne will be replaced by Billy Soul Bound.

Advertisements for the festival tout an unnamed "special guest" performer. Hoover says the artist is "nationally known," but denies that it is Indianola native B.B. King or Johnson enthusiast Eric Clapton.

"We tried to get Eric Clapton to come to this festival, but he was all booked up," Hoover said.

Clapton, whose latest album "Me and Mr. Johnson" is a tribute to the blues performer, has described Johnson's music as his "oldest friend."

Claud Johnson, Robert Johnson's only son, has helped organize the event, along with his sons, Michael, Steven and Greg Johnson.

Hoover said organizers plan to make the festival an annual event.

Proceeds will go to the Robert Johnson Blues Foundation, which was developed to aid "less fortunate blues performers" who are in need of money for health care. Hoover said the foundation is also focusing on the blues performers of tomorrow.

"We want to teach the young people about the blues in the Mississippi Delta," Hoover said.
