new haven jazz festival had him last nite with ts monk opening (thelionius monks son also very good) but hadn't seen lang since he opened for stones a while back ad this time being up front dead center his playing really impressed me. knew his older stuff but last nite was mostly new stuff from album coming out in sept.
the kid can play... heck it rained and wife and i stayed thru when normally i would bail at a free show but i can't believe the kid can play... has another baby faced kid playing with him who is also very good.
stones need more openers like him to get younger audiences as it appearrs he is very popular with the younger crowd... many fine young women in the crowd.

For awhile Johnny Lang was hyped to be some kind of blues rock savior and couldn't live up to the hype. Monster Mike Welch was another one that couldn't live up to the hype. Not that these kids weren't REALLY REALLY GOOD, it's just that the hype over-shadowed and maybe even destroyed the reality. |

Monster Mike Welch played at my uncle's wedding a couple years ago. I must say, I was impressed. Man, can he play that strat! He's got the blues-y voice, also. Jonny Lang pales in comparison. |
