That is Vanessa Redgrave the actress on Mick's shirt. It's a famous photo from the 1960's, by Skrebneski. The photo is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. |

Funny to read the other reviews from this show.
I guess the difference is that others have seen more shows from the Licks tour than me (my first actually)and listen and observe more critically than I do.
I really 'experienced' (like Rollin Bunny) a great Stones-concert that by moments brought my mind back to The Hague - Malieveld.
Also a surprise to read about the sound. Where I stood (field - Keith side - a third of the field from the stage - to the side) it was the best sound I ever heard during a Stones concert. Raw guitars, less non annoying keyboards, strong (but not too!) bass and drums. Even the b-stage sound was very, very good!!
(A few months ago I was in de Kuip for Bruce Springsteen on almost the same spot and 'prayed' that the sound would be as good with the Stones. I think my prayer was heard...........)
So far.............

great review Angiegirl, I was standing in the fos area, 20th row to the front, I thought the sound was great, so indeed it must've been the place you stood. Quality show, up to their standard.great atmosphere, amazing screen.
the joke of the evening was indeed the confetti sticking to Jagger's neck for the whole song |

SDH, did you read the reviews? By most accounts, a mediocre performance and yet again bad sound!!! I want to know the real reason behind the continuous bad sound problems..please tell me!!!!!! |

Well, shit. Sounds like Ronnie's off the wagon...
The translation's abysmal, but I got that he had to be carried back into the hotel...
Fuck. You sure this isn't a story from '99? I can't make much of the translation, but the story seems to say something about "a fan takes his picture, and he likes it so much he does something nice..." after the whole thing about being dragged back into the hotel by bodyguards.

Well, come to think of it, the sound was a bit muddy at all 3 United Center '03 shows.
Aragon was a bit muddy and off key too.
Comiskey was fucking great though.
Maybe they're playing muddy so it will sound better when the SBD comes out, I don't really know but obviously (very much obviously) wouldn't you think if WE think the sound is muddy, wouldn't the sound techs, stage people or insiders think it's muddy too? There must be a reason why it's muddy.
Maybe their doing a tribute to Muddy Waters! LOL!!
But yeah, the sound is muddy and sometimes off key. |

The only reason is that, that fucker behind mixind doesnīt
do shit about it,or even cares. He should be fired,,,,i canīt
believe that stones themselves are that careless? |

God i'm getting really worried, the concerts seem to be falling apart. Lets hope they get their act together by the time they hit london. Is ronnie really back on the piss? |
|
jb |
You should be worried, very worried...the concerts have fallen apart since L.A. benefit show and gone down hill since....we marvelled at a so-called rejuvenated Ronnie when in reality , he was marginally competent compared to past tours...Keith has sadly deteriorated to the point where there is simply no guitars in the mix for obvious reasons....this really is Mick Jagger, Charlie and Chuck....an extension of Mick's solo career just doing Stones songs.... |
|
sandrew |
I can tolerate Ronnie; him being healthy is just a bonus. But Keith's apparent downfall -- how many botched intros on an average night? -- is the really troubling thing. |

IS IT TOO LATE TO CALL A CERTAIN MICK TAYLOR? |
|
Angiegirl |
Keith wasn't too bad yesterday actually...he made the least mistakes, Jagger made the most! But Jagger was also the greatest man on stage yesterday, together with Charlie, they were amazing! Keith was really solid, but the problem for me was, that he didn't play too inspired, you know, he wasn't on fire like in Prague. I was disappointed by that. Ronnie was just plain invisible and inaudible yesterday. I'm sorry, but he was. So the show wasn't falling apart. It was a regular stadium show, but indeed the band is pulled forward by Jagger, Chuck and Charlie most of the times, yesterday included. |

"Marginally compotent?" Like it or not, jb, through the American tour, Ronnie was *on fire*. In '02, the big problem was that he was more on fire than Keith, and knew it! In '03, when I saw them again in Boston, I was floored by what a great show they gave, much more even than in '02 where Ronnie did have to carry Keith through a few numbers, a job he's never been capable of, even in '75 when he did it last.
On the American leg of this tour, we had some *outstanding* shows, where it was as if Chuck Leavell and His Backup Singers were backstage crying while the Stones destroyed every song. There were a few crap ones, too, no doubt (Oakland springs to mind... remember Oakland? Oh, the Joint, too... I'd've *hated* to pay $1000 to see *that* show.), but they seemed fewer and further between the great shows. Now the positions have reversed. Neither Keith nor Ronnie could keep that up for that long.
What happened to those shows? We all *know* that they're capable of turning out incredible '75-era shows - they have the ability. Keith and Ronnie both can play as good as they did in the old days, but you hear them doing it less and less as the tour drags on.
Keith had to carry Ronnie through a lot of '89, '94 and '97. Maybe he's just sick of it and thinks it's time for Ronnie to do the legwork, which everyone knows he's not capable of after less than a year on the wagon. Maybe Ronnie felt guilty, playing head and shoulders above his old drinking buddy at a few wildly uneven but good-in-their-own-right shows that usually ended in them yelling at each other.
I get the feeling Ronnie's joined Keith in drinking again, just because he knows they're going to turn him down no matter what he does, so he might as well enjoy spending time with Keith instead of running around with Mick all the time just to keep clean. He can't carry Keith, Keith doesn't want to carry him, so we're back to no guitars again.
I get the sinking sensation that this is, if not the Stones's, at least Ronnie's last tour. If he's back boozing, Mick'll kick him right out at the end of the final show. If he's clean, it might take another studio album, but I don't think they'll tour again with him.
Maybe Justin Timberlake can join them. I hear he plays a mean guitar.
