It'll be in regular cinemas. makes no commercial sense for it not to be. Cant imagine it'd be more than a limited run, though. The days of rock movies being big box office are long gone.
Considering the cost of a STONES concert ticket, the price of a movie ticket is well worth the cost for the people who couldn't afford the live gigs. And, with the tour reaching it's conclusion, many of the fans will be looking for some new STONES excitement. I say the timing is beautiful and the movie will be a huge box office success. |

Nah, it won't even be in the Top Ten movies of its debut week. People don't go to concert movies anymore, not even when those wappers make 'em. |

Cant see it. Even after previous tours when they released a film in the cinemas (LSTNT for example), public interest was very limited. They even showed the Rio show in cinemas, remember....for one night. Even a concert film by the likes of Madonna or U2 doesnt gross that much.
Youre right about the cost of a Stones concert ticket, but the general public wont even buy a new Stones album these days, so I cant see them queueing round the block to watch a concert movie. Especially when you take into account the age demographic of the average Stones fan - an age group who would probably rarely go to see ANY movie.
Personally, I'm actually quite surprised there even appears to be a demand for it to be shown in a cinema at all. I would have put money on them just putting it on TV and then releasing it on DVD instead, so for a concert movie in 2007 to even GET cinema distribution is rare.

It will open in limited venues the week end of Sept 21st and be on DVD release before Thanksgiving.I thought a ton of people would have wanted to see Rio with the huge crowd..All 9 of us in the theater that night had lots of leg room to enjoy it.I'm sure it will be a fab movie but the theater thing is just part of the promo for the real deal...which is to sell DVD's....

Dont you think the importance of Martin Scorsese himself will bring seriousness to Shine A Light? I think it will have a positive effect in bringing it into the mainstream. It should be heavily advertised and promoted.
But, unfortunately with the movie from The Rio show, the theatre was quite empty, it was a weeknight but no one lined up to see that. |

yes, you're right - but then again, Scorsese also directed the Dylan documentary 'No Direction Home' 2 years ago, which was acclaimed as one of the greatest rock documentaries ever made. Still didnt manage to get a theatre release but was show on BBC and one of the major US channels instead (maybe it was only PBS, I cant recall)
Ok, Dylan commercially isnt in the same league as the Stones are (even though he's regarded maybe in a higher plane 'artistically', whatever thats worth) but the point is that rock movies - regardless of how high profile the director is - just arent 'mainstream' anymore. |

the IMAX technologly will allow everyone to see the hideousness of those that were escorted to the back of the venue in larger-than-life detail. |

I saw that too (the story, not the bit about your hair)
Seems odd they'd do this after the website was launched within the last few days, though...? |

Me and nanky will be there with bells on, no matter where. Don't worry Lux Gazza will pay for the hair dressers to come back. |

Scorsese's Rolling Stones film delayed until 2008
Friday August 10, 01:09 PM
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The theatrical release of Martin Scorsese's concert documentary about the Rolling Stones has been postponed by seven months to sometime next April, distributor Paramount Classics said on Thursday.
A spokeswoman said the Viacom Inc.-owned studio needed more time to set up the promotional campaign for "Shine A Light," noting that the band is busy touring Europe until August 26.
The film, whose title comes from an old Rolling Stones gospel song, was shot during two performances at New York's Beacon Theatre last fall, when guest performers included bluesman Buddy Guy, rocker Jack White of the White Stripes, and pop singer Christina Aguilera.
Scorsese, who often uses Rolling Stones compositions in his movies, was in Rome early last month to screen a rough cut of the film for the band. The documentary originally had been set to open in theaters on September 21.
The Rolling Stones recently released a four-disc DVD documenting various stops on the 2006 leg of their "Bigger Bang" world tour. Singer Mick Jagger is also preparing for the October release of an album compiling tracks from his various solo endeavors.
