Guy, Musselwhite star at blues festival

Blues doesn't have to be boring. Just consider some of the highlights from the past 32 years of the San Francisco Blues Festival.
One year, albino blues guitarist Johnny Winter locked himself in a tour bus and refused to face the 12,000 fans restlessly awaiting his performance. Another time, an unnamed performer puked in midsong and just kept on playing. And then there is the most requested backstage rider item: a bottle of Courvoisier. How can this thing not be fun?
"I don't know if I should tell you this," the event's founder and producer, Tom Mazzolini, says. "There was a blues fan that came to the festival every year, and when he died, his wife had him cremated and spread his ashes on the lawn."
The headliners for this year's festival, Sept. 25 and 26 at Fort Mason, are Buddy Guy, Charlie Musselwhite, Marcia Ball, Bobby Rush and Keb' Mo'.
But the bill also features some more interesting, if slightly less popular characters, like Mickey Champion and T-Model Ford.
"He's 78 years old and has served on a chain gang in Mississippi," Mazzolini says. "He's a man who's committed murders. He says he's the most violent man he knows. Of course, he's mellowed out a little bit. But that's as real as it gets."
One of the biggest coups for this year's bill is the British Invasion, which features Peter Green, Long John Baldry, Kim Simmonds, Bob Hall, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Colin Allen and Danny Thompson -- names that might not mean much to the average person but are at this very moment causing at least 3 percent of the people reading this to go into ecstasies.
Over the years, the San Francisco Blues Festival has hosted historic performances by the likes of B.B. King, John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Ry Cooder.
And if it seems a little odd that this festival highlighting music to and from downtrodden people takes place year after year on one of the most expensive pieces of real estate of the world, with sweeping views of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge, it's all part of the experience.
"That's the genius of it," Mazzolini says. "When I go by that meadow, I remember just about everybody who played an important role in the history of blues music at one time or the other all those years. It's really a historical place."

The 32nd Annual San Francisco Blues Festival kicks off with a free 90- minute harmonica showcase at Justin Herman Plaza at noon Sept. 24. Then it moves to Fort Masonfrom 11 a.m. till 6 p.m. Sept. 25 and 26. $25-$70. (415) 421-8497, www.ticketmaster.com. For more information, call (415) 979-5588 or visit www.sfblues.com.
