gimmekeef Is it possible that Woody is seeking help for his smoking this time and not the booze? Not sure what this Priory Place does of course but it seems his smoking is as big a threat to him as drink.....Good Lucky Ronnie!

I hope so. After getting a few more boots and listening, it's pretty interesting to hear the deterioration as he starts slipping in 2003 as Keith tries to heat up. Obviously neither of them are very capable of handling their addictions anymore.

I dunno about you all, but I'm eighteen. I was just kicking around with a few of my friends last night, and we were bored. So we drank. It's not a willfully destructive thing - it's just a "what do we do with ourselves" thing. Even in the band (we've since broken up) it was just so easy - what do you do? You drink.

It's that "four on a Sunday" feeling. Rock stars, and Ronnie in particular, always get labeled "childish" - I just think they didn't sit tight for the last four-to-five years of what we consider "childhood" and went out on the road instead. How many great rockers do you know that went through college and grad school? Kids like us and rock stars both don't have the capacity to find a way to channel that "I'm not doing anything" energy or supress it or whatever. The trick is to keep us from being bored. If you noticed, Ronnie tried very hard to keep busy. He played with everyone that would take him, including Bob Dylan - the boot's OK, he obviously doesn't know half the songs but he turns in a *fantastic* version of "Down Along The Cove" for the man - but he sounded sober there. Because he wasn't bored. Now the Stones aren't working, Rod Stewart wants to make more old people music, Dylan's cruising around Europe with a much younger band... what can you do? Hang around Ireland? Go to the...pubs? Sure, *that'd* be a great idea. Go dancing? Booze-central and worse these days. Sit at home? Boredom-central and worse.

It sucks to sit around doing nothing if you're young or young at heart. You can *feel* time passing. You're getting older fast and pretty soon people're going to look at you like you know what you're doing. You wait around expecting to be educated as to how to do everything the adult world does but nothing happens. Eventually the terrible realization that old people are often as clueless or more clueless than you are sets in and you really start questioning everything. When doctors diagnose, you look at them with contempt. When politicians talk, you sneer. The fact that "acting older" is in fact just acting, that civilization itself is the higher human brain rebelling against the basic instinct of "do whatever it takes to survive, no more, no less", is mortifying. The rest of your education will be not instructions on how to master yourself but conditioning for properly coping with the fact that human beings essentially live a life that conflicts with their basic programming. If you don't have those extra years of instruction be it in college or in a solid job, you don't have something like the 9-to-5 or a college education or a sound religious system that isn't a "believe or no TV for a week" to keep your animal instinct balanced out right. Kids and rockers don't have that, and in the case of the rockers, they have very little chance of ever getting it. Look at Dylan. He's tried every single remedy, from activism to counter-activism to booze to drugs to religion to booze again and's settled on just touring constantly to keep himself in check.

It's tough. What can you do? Drinking gets you through the long day, there's no question, at a terrible, terrible cost. Unfortunately Ronnie can't go chase Dylan or hang with the Charlatans all the time - he's got money! He's got a family! He's got responsibility! How else can someone who's never been trained to do anything else make it through the day? It's really rough, yet very very interesting. A lot of artistic-type people suffer from the same sorts of things and lead troubled lives because of it.

Yecch. Well, get better, Ronnie. You can come play with me if you want - I just got a new guitar...

Soldatti Ronnie was on rehab on March 2002 and they anounced the tour on May 2002, two months later.
Could be the same now?

WOW, I am amazed. You are really only 18 ? I am 48 and there is so much wisdom in your words that I am jealous about it. And I am NOT kidding.

Gazza >Ronnie was on rehab on March 2002 and they anounced the tour on May 2002, two months later.
Could be the same now?

maybe but I think its more likely that he's going into rehab for one simple reason. If he doesn't FINALLY get his act together, he won't be around for much longer. He's already been told that if he doesn't quit smoking and drinking, he's fucked. He knows that and so does everyone around him.

Right now, the fact that a tour may be not too far away is inconsequential. And rightly so. This shit is way more important.

Monkey Woman And Ronnie is aware that his marriage is also in jeopardy. Remember that article in "Word" posted by Hannalee? He said that the smoking was giving him emphysema and the drinking was driving Jo desperate. Horrible situation.

maybe this is really dumb, but what is emphysema?
July 18th, 2004 04:27 PM
Monkey Woman "Emphysema is a chronic disease of the lungs which is characterized by parenchymal destruction distal to the terminal bronchioles. Smoking, air pollution, environmental or occupational hazards, and genetic factors may play a role in this disease. Symptoms of emphysema usually begin with breathing difficulty especially during exhalation, shortness of breath, an enlarged chest, and bluish skin color."

From http://emphysema.allbio.org/

In other words, the lungs slowly cease to function until you die.

Have a little understanding, Glimmer. As big a Taylor fan as I am, and being rather disappointed that a reunion didn't happen at either one of the Stones or Taylor shows in London last August, keep in mind that Ronnie is a Stone. To replace him with someone who (presumably) walked out years ago would be ludicrous. If Ronnie's problems are as bad as rumoured to be, he still deserves the chance to set himself straight and continue on. To use this situation as a reason to revisit history is heartless. Perhaps, though, some reconciliation between Taylor and the Glimmer Twins will happen, and a few lucky fans will see them onstage together again in the future.

Bloozehound How far removed from reality is the of the average obsessive M. Taylor-fanatic ?

M. Taylors involvement with the Rolling Stones is a memory, a good memory at that, but a memory none-the-less.

FotiniD TSYX, that was an a-m-a-z-i-n-g post. Great thinking.
However, I would think he's got stuff to do... As said, he's got a family with many children, just being with them must take up a lot of time. Leah and Jesse have a band, why not play with them or stuff? And he's got painting, which is time-consuming as well. What I'm trying to say is that since he made it so far and managed to beat the addiction, he shouldn't let mere boredom keep him from moving on with his life. I mean, I feel bored often too, but hey, I don't have the money that can afford me, say, a trip to some faraway land to keep me busy! I mean, he's got tons of stuff he can do, if he really wants to. And he should!

And Bloozehound, I couldn't agree more about the Taylor remark. I find it appaling and also funny (!) that every time Woody has a problem, some people bring up the "Come back Mick Taylor" banners.

I wouldn't worry too much though, I have this stupid but persistent gut feeling that Woody'll be fine. And he'll be in better shape for the next tour, whenever it comes.

July 19th, 2004 06:30 AM
kahoosier Damn, not only is the post about MT about the most classles I have ever read, porn sites included, but it amazes me that people think after 30 years this could ever happen. Poor Ronnie could get healthy, walk away from the Stones and join a monastery in Tibet, and Keith would still not tour with MT. It did not happen last year when the oppurtunity was ripe for even one show.It has happened once in 30 years, and Keith complained! The guys are barely civil in the press to each other!

Please Ronnie, get well so the MT vultures cna quit circling around your job.

Zeeta This post has hit a nerve because my dad is currently critically ill in hospital with booze / cigs related illness. It's fuckin sad state of affairs. He fell over whilst drunk cracked his ribs which punctured his lung.
We didnt even find the poor bastard until friday. His face was puffy and it was the air from his lungs that had gone under the skin. He's 60 a rock and roller and now he is in intensive are and the doctors say that his chances are 50/50 and that is optimistic.

Horrible times, all related to him being an alchoholic and not looking after himself. he has had a stroke, cancer of the mouth, pnumonia (sp) and now this. After he had be resuccitated etc etc after he had pnumonia he STILL continued to smoke and drink heavily.

Anyway what I'm saying is at least Ronnie WANTS to quit. Because if a person doesn't have that, then they dont have much hope.
July 19th, 2004 07:40 AM
Gazza Horrible. Hope your dad gets well soon, mate.
July 19th, 2004 07:45 AM
LadyJane Very sad news, Zeeta.

Best wishes to you, your family and most especially your Dad. Hang in there!

LJ.

I agree that the MT vultures are showing NO CLASS at this time!!!

Honky Tonk Man Terrible news Matt. It must be fucking hard for you and I can't imagine what you must be going through.

On a very slightly brighter note, hope to bump into you at Walkabout sometime. Been up there past two Saturdays.

Alex

FotiniD Hey Zeeta, you sure put things in the right prospective. Hope your dad gets well really soon! All the best to you and your family.
July 19th, 2004 09:22 AM
Zeeta Thanks people, greatly appreciated - and I didn't really think anyone bothered to read my posts!
My brother just rang the hospital and he seems to be getting slightly better - slowly reducing the help from the ventilator etc.
If he suvives this then maybe he is immortal! Anyway early days but not bad news anyway!
Yeah Alex mate we will have to get on the lash at the walkabout let me know when you are up for it!
July 19th, 2004 09:59 AM
Honky Tonk Man Well I think it's about time we had a session.

The best thing about walkabout is that you can watch football when youre taking a pee!

Another good thing is that the place actually has Aussie sin it. They have opened one up in Bromley, but whats the point if there are just local people there?

The bad thing about walkabout is that if you get TOO hammered you get escorted out. Happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Stella is the reason why. Absolute poison!

Will pm you my mobile number tomorrow.

It's faded, but the stamp on my hand from Saturday is still visible. Damn hard to scrub off.

Also, that indie club I told you about is 1 minute around the corner.
