Went to see Chuck Berry last night in Oxford and i had a cracking time.
Although I think the fact that I had been drinking all day probably had something to do with it.
77 years old and still going out and rocking. the Stones have got another fifteen years left in them just to catch up with the old bugger!
Not as good as he used to be, but blimey man, at least he's still out there playing. Keep on rocking old dude! |

I love that man...
but I saw the pic of him now,and he looks scary at 77 |

He doesn't look scary at all, he looks decades younger than his age. But he is really messing around on this Tour. Have seen him much better, also in recent years.
Chuck Berry in Wolverhampton 2004 (pictures taken by Richard Harvey)
doing that goddamn duckwalk:
He is still a great entertainer, but a piece of shit as a human being. He and the bitch he carries with him on this Tour spitted at a cameraman in France! They sure don't know how to behave! Crazy fucker!

Did he invite the crowd onstage to dance for the last number? I saw him in '99, I think, got onstage and was 1-ft from the man. |

He always does that. But I was sitting in the Front Row and Backstage anyway so I did not bother.

I saw him in Grimsby on 9th July.
His guitar work was very 'lazy' ,except on Johnny B.Goode.
Still glad I went though.

PS what's with the poetry ? |

He does the poetry sometimes. Two possibilites:
a) His guitar string breaks (got only one guitar with him), he does the poetry as a "filler" until he gets the guitar back -> okay
b) He does the poetry as a usual part of his contracted 60 min set -> insult to the paying costumer, the fellow makes around 40,000 bucks per gig!!
Some of those gimmicks (poetry, jokes, song dedicated to Ray Charles) appear at almost every gig now. It's nice when you see it once, but after I saw him 7 times in 2 weeks I surely had enough of it. And I am a huge Chuck Berry fan (Webmaster of www.chuckberry.de). I thought that Jerry Lee Lewis was overall better on this Tour even though he postponed the Bristol show for no apparent reason. Chuck was GREAT in Brighton which proved that he can still do it if he wants. What he needs is a real band, but I think we can forget that. He won't change anymore after 50 years in showbusiness.

Sportsmans. Around 1981 or so
Were you at "Disco Demolition" at Comiskey 25yrs ago?

Chuck Berry hasn't played in tune for over 25 years, it truly is horrible. But if you listen to his 50's recrods it's just unbelievable -it could have been recorded yesterday!

haha, no, but I do remember an older neighbor kid telling my (Cub fan) friend and I (Sox fan) about it.
Chuck played one of the racetracks a few years back but I did not attend. Don't think the old man was delivering there in '81, he was walking in Cicero then. |

Look at the pictures above. He can still duckwalk like no one else. He is a master showman, but no musician.

I saw Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis about 10 years back (PNE Colliseum). Penniman was still on fire but Jerry Lee got booed until security had to escort him from the stage after his set dragged on for over an hour. Litle Richard finally got to play, and he opened with 'Great Balls Of Fire' funny as hell! Richard got a standing ovation for a song that JLL had been booed for not 20 minutes earlier. I guess the point of the story is that some of these old farts belong on stage, others...well... |
|
WolfgangG |
@ stones-addict:
You know what you're talking about. These guys are completely different every night. I have seen Little Richard as he blew Jerry Lee Lewis off the stage and vice versa. So you can't say that one belongs to the stage while the other should better retire. Especially Jerry Lee Lewis has been written off a million times in his career, but he always bounced back. The "writes-offs" are getting boring...

In JLL's case, maybe if he stayed sober he would rock every time. He looked beyond drunk when I saw him. I could be wrong... |
|
WolfgangG |
No way, he is sober for 20 years now, but was on drugs just until recently.
When mentioning Jerry Lee Lewis people always think of whiskey, but in fact he is more a druggie. He was an alcoholic in the 70's though.

I should have known he was too fucked up for it to be booze... Good for him kicking the drugs, though. That man had way too much talent to waste. It was a real diappointment to see him perform as I did. I had really looked forward to seeing him play. |

I saw Chuck Berry last fall at SUNY in New York on his 77th birthday. It was great. He kind of jumped around from song to song and some were better than others but I loved "Memphis" and "Reelin' & Rockin'" but the best was "My Ding A Ling". I was on the ground laughing so hard. Seeing a 77 year old man sing that song was priceless!!!
LONG LIVE CHUCK!!!
"I remember the girl next door
We used to place house on the kitchen floor
I'd be king, She'd be queen
Together we'd play with my ding-a-ling-a-ling!!!!"
