Stones 'back Brian Jones biopic'
By Caroline Briggs
BBC News entertainment reporter in Cannes
The Rolling Stones have given their backing to a film about their late guitarist Brian Jones, the movie's director has said.
During the film's launch at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday, Stephen Woolley said he had messages of support from Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.
Jones was found dead in his Sussex swimming pool in 1969.
Mr Woolley said he had found a fourth person who was at the star's home on the night he died and had new evidence.
He said he may go to the police with information he received from the woman, who he refused to name.
Brian Jones died from an apparent drink and drugs overdose.
Mr Woolley said Jagger had wished him luck with the movie. "From what I have heard, they have no problem with the film or what we are about," he said.
"But I deliberately did not involve them because I did not want it to be a film about the Rolling Stones."
The film is based on three books about Jones' mysterious death from an apparent drink and drugs overdose, including one by his girlfriend Anna Wohlin.
Mr Woolley bought the rights to the books and has spent 10 years researching the film.
One theory is that he was killed by his builder, Frank Thorogood, who died in 1993.
Mr Woolley produced films such as Scandal and The Crying Game.
Thorogood is played by Paddy Considine while actor Leo Gregory, 26, stars as Jones - an experience he described as "an actor's dream".
He said: "I was sent this amazing script, and I just fell in love with it.
"I didn't know much about Brian, so when I got the part I read all the literature about him and immersed myself in everything.
"The most difficult thing for me was cramming in everything about his life and his music." Stoned is due to be released in 2006.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the film. The stones may have given it their blessing but Wyman has trashed it re content / conspiracy / murder theory as Brian's bird supposedly stayed with Bill for 4 days hiding from the press after the incident and he felt that she would have said something to him if things were dodgy.....so I read somewhere! |
