Elton mourns pop guru
by Richard Simpson
Sir Elton John is devastated after his close friend and producer Gus Dudgeon was crushed to death in a high-speed motorway crash.
The music guru, 69, and his wife Sheila died instantly when their Jaguar XK8 sped off the M4 near Reading and overturned in a field.
Dudgeon was credited with launching Sir Elton, David Bowie and The Rolling Stones to stardom. He worked with Sir Elton throughout his career - producing 15 of his best-selling albums.
Their relationship has been described as "akin to George Martin and The Beatles"-Sir Elton was thought to be holidaying in the South of France when he heard the news.
A friend said today: "He will be absolutely devastated by this tragedy. Gus was more than a producer for Elton - he was a true and loyal friend as well."
The Dudgeons had been returning home to Cobham, Surrey, early yesterday morning after a party in Newbury and had just overtaken some traffic when they crashed off the motorway, a Thames Valley police spokesman said.
