Topic: Black and Blue: tell me something about it Return to archive

Jair B&B is my favourite Stones album, the firt I bought back in 76. Before yesterday, I've made a big decision: I gave that old vinyl to my kid, with a much likely fussy sign: "to the best son in the world, the most special album of my life".

Of course, I have several editions of B&B, from many countries, also in different formats. But that was the first.

My kid asked me: why the name Black and Blue?: is it something to do with some black music that I can hear in this album? I didnt answer, because...i dont know" It is?

Anyway, Im glad my son finally is enjoying The Rolling Stones, and day by day more interested about them.
Cool, isnt?

Well, just a little story...

Soldatti Because it's Black and it's blue... Well, black and blue... It's a play on Blonde On Blonde. Blue for the blues - the blues have always been part of our music. Mmmm... it's as good a title as any other, isn't it? They could have called it Cowbell for all I care. It was good because we thought of this cover picture: the sky... and the night... black night, blue sky...

- Mick Jagger, 1976, on why the album
is called Black And Blue

Obviously from a time where Mick was still doing drugs. He's as incoherent here as Chris Robinson is today.

the good Hand of fate kicks ass. Very underrated tune.

Nellcote It was Wicked Pissa at the time.
Who could not like Woody's introduction to the band?
The double bill funk of Hot Stuff & Hey Negrita was enough to sell anyone.
Crazy Mama was the blast that ended it.
Memory Motel was a succesful duet which you never get enough of.
Every time I go to the ocean, I guess I knew it well.
I recall hardcore fans groveled about Fool To Cry at the time, then it grew on people.
The same will happen with Streets Of Love.
The lp is still Wicked Pissa!

Bitch I always thought BLACK & BLUE was referring to the color of their eyes! MICK's eyes are so blue, and KEEF's are so dark they look black. MICK represents blue daylight, KEEF represents dark nightime. You need them both to be complete.

HOT STUFF is my favorite tune on this album!
hot stuff, can't get enough! ...mighty mighty fiiine

As a kid in the 4th grade buying comic books I remember seeing ads for this album in my comic books. At the time had no interest in The Stones.

RollingstonesUSA HEY NEGRITA
(M. Jagger/K. Richards)

Hey Negrita, hey now
Move your body, move your mouth
Shake lady, way down south
Shake baby, in your home town

Come si chiama, what's you game
I'm just a poor man, what's your name
Shake your body, do it up now
Shake body, move it up now

Hey Negrita, hey now
Hey conchita, shake it up now
Bate las caderas, do it up now

Flash of gold in your ears, child
Flash of gold in your eyes
Saw the gleam in your mouth
Saw the steel in your thighs
Do it up now

Bate las caderas, do it up now
Just a momentita, not so fast
I need money, my sweet ass
Listen I'm a poor man
My pay is low
Here's one last dollar, then we go
"One last dollar," she say "I got my pride"
Going to get your boss, boy
Going to tan your hide

Hey Negrita, hey now
Hey Negrita, do it right now

B&B was a transitional album. It is also the first full featured album with Mr. Ronnie Wood. It is a short album and made albums such as Some Girls and Emotional Resque possible in the light they were seen in. B&B moved The Stones away from traditional Rock and Roll into Disco and Raggae which made Somw girls, Emotional Resque and some of Tattoo You in the light they were written.
