Topic: Another 'SOL' thought-thread... Return to archive

IrelandCalling4 'Dia is muire dhuit' to one an' all..

Before getting to 'Streets of Love'--one of the most divisive of stones tracks,and it's only been available since yesterday,a thought on 'Rough Justice'. It cooks!! Loved this one! Lusty of lyric,primal of beat,it rocks and rolls,supreme!

However,highly disappointed by SOL. Like many here,I've loved stones ballads of yore--from classics like "Wild Horses","Let it loose" and "Beast of Burden",right up to recent gems like "The Worst","Slipping Away" and the wonderful "Almost Hear You Sigh". Quality tracks all,soulful & bluesy ballads. With SOL though,it seems devoid of any soul,a made-for-radio mess.It's just not a good song,and a disappointment that it not only will be on the album,but,is likely to be the lead-off single.Maybe why people are so disappointed is that we know the stones can do so much better.

texile yup - you said it ireland,
i love jagger's ballads - even loved jagger's don't call me up and too far gone off GITD....let it loose is sublime and shouldn't even be mentioned on the same thread as sol;
but you're right to mention it and others because that's it - sol is souless - no passion or urgency, and the generic lyrics just reflect the lack of real heart.
but hey, i'm still hoping.....

texile think of ain't no use in crying - just compare jagger's voice, the lyrics in this song to something like sol -
his voice was pleading, not whiny; desperate, not indulgent;
his voice quavered with emotion when he sang lines like..
'standing in the balcony,
you look way off toward the sea -
if you see a ship come sailing...its not me,
its not me...'
anyone who's been in a painful relationship can relate to that - i've been there, felt that in my life - same with beast of burden or any of the great ballads.....
these new lyrics, they don't move me....they're sterile.
