SeerSuckersuit Pete and Roger are alright

It's been a somber year for Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, starting last summer with the death of their Who co-founder, John Entwistle, and continuing with Townshend being charged with, then cleared of, downloading child pornography. That doesn't mean the surviving members will quietly overlook the 40th anniversary of the year the band first moved beyond performing R&B covers and started playing Townshend compositions. This is, after all, the band that once held the Guinness record for the loudest act in the world.

There's talk now of a tour, as well as a show in October celebrating what would have been Entwistle's 59th birthday. At the center of the planning is the first DVD release of "The Kids Are Alright," the 1979 documentary often ranked among the best rock films ever, alongside the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" and the Band's "The Last Waltz."

The film will be available Sept. 30 in two packages: a double-disc special edition featuring a bonus disc titled "Won't Get Filmed Again," and a single-disc with the film and alternate commentary tracks. The bonus disc will include interviews with Daltrey and director Jeff Stein, who initiated the project in 1970, when he was a 17-year-old Who fanatic who approached Townshend backstage at a concert with the idea. It also includes full footage, totaling 100 minutes, from six cameras used to film the 1978 performances of "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't Get Fooled Again" that were centerpieces of the film.

Entwistle's death preceding the DVD release is a bit of déjà vu: The film's original release came on the heels of Keith Moon's 1978 death from an accidental overdose of prescription medication.

Stein says that although he had screened the film for Moon just two days before he died, he resisted temptation to change the film in any way to make it a Moon memorial. And he says he has no problem with Townshend and Daltrey continuing to perform as the Who.

"It's their band," he says. "People still want to see them. People still need to see them, and people get off when they see them."

corgi37 The Who and Bugs Bunny DVD release. Fantastic. At least one band likes to look after their fans with new and re-mastered dvd's. So that means that since the Stones released B2B (cd & dvd), the Who have brought out re-jigged Live at Leeds, hell, re-jigged all their cd's (with bonus tracks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), toured (twice isnt it?), released a live dvd from ALbert Hall, are recording new material, 1/3 of them became a legend by carking it with 2 strippers and now this great movie is being re-released with so many extras. Breaks your fucking heart doesnt it. Where is the Licks dvd? Where is the 72, 75, 78, 81, 89 DVD's with fucking extra footage and commentary. Where is Cocksucker Blues, goddamn it! Sure, they've been touring for nearly a year, but does the Rolling Stones world stop when they tour? And their last release of new stuff was in 97, they havent been touring all that fucking time. Still, i love em. The bastards.

VoodooChileInWOnderl Daltrey does history

Icons of rock 'n' roll increasingly become reminders of mortality. The cute Beatle is Sir Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger is a grandfather and now Roger Daltrey, lead singer of the eardrum-puncturing, instrument-smashing the Who, is doing documentaries for the History Channel.

Extreme History With Roger Daltrey, premiering Oct. 5, will have the rocker retracing the exploits of adventurers and explorers from America's past. In one episode, he'll follow the route of John Wesley Powell, who charted the Colorado River in 1869. Daltrey also will take a trip along the Chisholm Trail, on which 19th century cowboys drove their herds, and retrace the path of the 1805 Lewis and Clark expedition.

The musician-actor said he is taking his career into uncharted terrain because it sounded like fun. "I thought it was a great chance to have a boy's own adventure."

A love of history is a late-in-life development for Daltrey, who says he hated history as a boy. "I was turned off because it was just about numbers and dates. The teaching in those days was poor, to say the least. As I got older, I realized that history was about people and people are always interesting."

Emulating the pioneers has been a daunting, humbling experience. "I can't imagine going down the Colorado River [the first time]. We knew what was in front of us. We knew there was a hotel around the corner, where we were going to go out and have a meal at night. These guys were out there and they didn't know whether Niagara Falls was around the corner and they're rowing backwards toward it. I'm sure if there was an easier way, they would have took it. Thank God they didn't."

Daltrey joked that he also wanted to do his own little bit to expand the horizons of the History Channel. "There is a problem, certainly in Europe, with the History Channel, where it's kind of known as the Hitler Channel. I mean, how many more guns and bombs can you look at? Give us a break. There are just many more things in history that are interesting."

Branching out doesn't mean Daltrey is turning away from the act that made him a music icon. Although the Who is now the Two -- Daltrey and Pete Townshend -- they plan to keep the tradition alive.

"The Who is going to be in the studio in October," Daltrey said. "Hopefully, we can come up with a new album. It will only be released if we think it's music that's got something to say about today."

He's confident he and Townshend are up to meeting their own challenging standards. "It's music that really demands a certain level of performance, and as long as I can give it that and he can give it that, we will be the Who. It's not the same without John [Entwistle] but when we start playing the songs, John and Keith [Moon] are both alive again. They are indelible within the music. They will always live within that music."
