actually, yes, i have been to india, and i was embarassed at the fact that i spend more money on beer over the course of a month than those people make in a year. it didn't, however, make me go sell all my guitars and live like the mahatma. instead, when i got home i joined big brothers/big sisters...my "little" graduates from high school in a year and will hopefully be attending a trade school...and now i do buy a bag of groceries for the local foodshelf every time i visit rainbow foods...oh yeah, i do buy a goat for susan sarandon every christmas...not perfect, i know, but better than before i was before i saw extreme poverty firsthand.
economic status is precisely what drives the nuts and bolts of fundamentalist islam. hamas and hezbollah get their recruits from refugee camps, not the golf courses.
ottomans? feej? you're comparing apples to foreskins here. when the ottomans slaughtered the armenians during WWI, the empire was completely on the decline. they were so poor they couldn't afford to make their own railroads and other infrastructure. as a matter of fact, at the same time, the young turks were running around europe trying to ally themselves with an allied power that would promise to defend them if and when the rest of the west headed into the middle east to carve up their empire like a turkey (pardon the pun!)...as we know that didn't happen...and for a hundred years the west has been fucking around with the arab world, which is, i suppose, a good reason why they're pissed. the last time the arab world tried to take over our turf was, what, the sixteenth century?
feej, what precisely do you know of life in the west bank or gaza? have you ever stopped to think that it might be a 50/50 issue? it is sooooooo not as black and white as you think it is. i could go on for hours...but i have to dust the computer room....more later...

Everyone has an "ism". It's those who think they don't that are the really scarey people! I embrace my prejudices and accept them, and some I preserve b/c thery are natural. Some are justified while others are contrived, some are learned and all are taught!

How many of the currently living ex-pats and relatives that you live with suffered under the Ottoman yoke? I'm not saying that it was candyland under the sultans, but I would say that Attaturk and the Turkish nationalists did far worse to the Greeks than the old Ottoman regime. My point was that the Ottoman Empire did not engage in wholesale religious persecution and extermination as was suggested. In reality, the Ottoman Empire was far more tolerant than many of its contemporaries in Western Europe. |
