Ten Thousand Motels EXPERTS SELECT 25 MUST-SEE MOVIES

British movie experts have named 25 films including CASABLANCA, BONNIE AND CLYDE and ANNIE HALL that they claim every cinema buff must watch. The varied list, published in UK magazine Radio Times, contains everything from established classics like STANLEY KUBRICK's PATHS OF GLORY to 1970s horror movie THE HILLS HAVE EYES and the critically-slated ARMAGEDDON. Radio Times' ANDREW COLLINS says, "Snobbery doesn't belong to the film buff. "To understand the 80s and 90s blockbuster you must accept producer JERRY BRUCKHEIMER into your life. Armageddon is the pinnacle of Bruckheimer excess." The 25 Movie Classic You Must See are, in no particular order: 1. CASABLANCA (1942) 2. THE CABARET OF DR CALIGARI (1919) 3. BLADE RUNNER (1982) 4. A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH (1946) 5. BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH (1947) 6. LA DOLCE VITA (1960) 7. HIGH NOON (1952) 8. REAR WINDOW (1954) 9. THE HIDDEN FORTRESS (1958) 10. BONNIE AND CLYDE (1967) 11. BRINGING UP BABY (1938) 12. THE HILLS HAVE EYES (1977) 13. UN CHIEN ANDALOU (1928) 14. ARMAGEDDON (1998) 15. HEAVEN'S GATE (1980) 16. ANNIE HALL (1977) 17. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952) 18. PATHS OF GLORY (1957) 19. PERFORMANCE (1970) 20. BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) 21. BLACKBOARDS (2000) 22. THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951) 23. PULP FICTION (1994) 24. SHOAH (1985) 25. WINTER LIGHT (1962).

The fantastic re release of "Metamorphosis" contains this...what a treat to fans!

Out of this entire list, Pulp Fiction is the only one I would watch (as I have seen it about 25 times).....the others are of zero interest to me!

The version of Memo on Metamorphosis is not the version used in Performance - it's on Singles Collection: The London Years.

Pulp Fiction is a great movie - never tire of watching it. "Honey Bunny" lives on my block.

Same here - the Metamorphosis version seems a bit rushed and also bears a striking resemblance to Gunface.

GotToRollMe They remembered "La Dolce Vita" but forgot "8 1/2" - but other than that, not a bad list for the most part.

Well that's a shame, cause there are some great films on there. I, for one, could hardly give a shit about Pulp Fiction or any other Tarantino film.

I am far too young to attempt to transplant myself into another era when there is plenty to entertain me in this era!

corgi37 As usual, any list without my input is crap. Hills have eyes!! Are they kidding? I mean, really.

And any list with Pulp Fiction but not Godfather, aint worth weeing on. Let alone one without a Romero film.

1. Dawn of the dead (original)
2. Godfather 1 &2
3. Wizard of Oz
4. Schindlers list
5. Woodstock
6. Gimme Shelter
7. Exorcist
8. Apocalypse Now
9. The Ox Bow incident
10. Punishment Park
11. 2001: A space odyssey
12. Psycho
13. Arsenic and old lace
14. Dr. Strangelove
15. Citizen Kane
16. King Kong (original)
17. Ben Hur
18. Joe
19. One flew over the cuckoos nest
20. Fail safe
21. Duck soup
22. O lucky man
23. Network
24. Jaws
25. Little big man

I’ve left out stuff like Star wars, titanic, blair witch etc for 1 reason. Though iconic films, they are not great movies. Clockwork orange, though very good (but so dated) just is not great. Controversial at the time, sure, but not great. I think O lucky man is better, smarter, and more important.

Gazza your wisecrack about Pulp Fiction aside, an impeccable list. The scary thing about that list is that someone of your age has even heard of a quarter of those films, let alone having the taste to appreciate them.

Excellent calls on "the General" and "metropolis" especially
19th July 2006 06:27 PM
Honky Tonk Man Steamboat Bill, while every one of those movies is undoubtedly classics (some I've seen, some I haven’t), I'm wondering as to why there be nothing after 1966? Is it because you don't enjoy modern films in general or because you don't feel that any of them warrant been in your personal top 20?

Anyway, it's a wonderful list and like Gazza, can only applaud you for such fine selections from someone your age.
19th July 2006 06:41 PM
glencar I would drop Shoah & Armeggadon(sp?) from the original list. If I want to be bored, I'll read a saint sway post.

I honestly wanted to include a few more modern films (Manhattan from '79 is the most recent on my list). Schindler's List is certainly a must-see film, and despite my feelings about Pulp Fiction I can't deny its influence and importance among modern films. In compiling a list, however, of the top 25 "must-see films" or "most important" films I just think older films often take precedence because they were there first. That's not to say Casablanca (of which I am NOT a big fan) is "better" than Pulp Fiction, just that its influence and "must-see" status outweighs anything by Tarantino. I will admit, though, that I do have a bias towards older films, usually before the '60's.

Also, in my haste I overlooked Singin' in the Rain and Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin. Throw in Out of the Past, Bergman's The Seventh Seal, and The Devil and Daniel Webster and you've got thirty must-see films.
