Ten Thousand Motels 'BEAM ME UP SCOTTY' STAR DIES

Former STAR TREK star JAMES DOOHAN died from pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease this morning (20JUL05) at the age of 85.

WENDE, the actor's wife of 28 years, and close pal STEVE STEVENS were by Doohan's side when he passed away at his Redmond, Washington home.

Doohan shot to fame in the original 1966 Star Trek series as MONTGOMERY SCOTT, the chief engineer of the Starship Enterprise.

But when the NBC show was cancelled in 1969 after just three series, Doohan found himself typecast as the Scottish technician, and was plagued by the command, "Beam me up Scotty", which his character responded to in each episode.

Doohan, who went on to star in the Star Trek spin-off movies, recently explained, "In 1973, I complained about Scott to my dentist. He replied, 'You'll be Scotty long after you're dead. If I were you, I'd go with the flow.'

"I took his advice and since then everything's been just lovely."

PeerQueer Kirk and Spock yet remain. Though battered and bruised, the Star Trek universe still survives so long as those two are with us.

I grew up on Trek reruns, and have always loved the series. A little nerdy - sure, but I don't care.

Many a time I have shouted out "I'm givin 'er all I got captain!" while bedding a lass or two.

Gotta give props to Scotty.

Redmond is a beautiful little city - Microsoft country. Great standard of living there.

Child of the Moon I was never a huge Star Trek fan, but I did grow up watching plenty of reruns, and I always liked Scotty. Cheers to you, James.

Ten Thousand Motels (I don't usually cut and paste other peoples posts from other boards but I'll make an exception here because I think it's that important... From maxlugar.com and thanks to Starbuck for posting this)

"At the outbreak of World War II, aged 19, he joined the Royal Canadian Artillery, and was eventually commissioned as a lieutenant. His first combat assignment was the invasion of Normandy at Juno Beach on D-Day. Shooting two snipers along the way, Doohan's unit made its way to higher ground and took defensive positions. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his middle right finger. The chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case; he would later generally hide the amputated finger on screen. Despite his wounds, Doohan remained in the military, trained as a pilot for the Royal Canadian Air Force, and flew an artillery observation plane, though he was once labeled the "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces".

FPM C10 I learned a lot about Scotty from this thread. Never knew his first name was Montgomery, for instance. And Doohan's WW2 experience PROVES smoking is good for ye.

Man, Star Trek is LAME, though.

Oh well. There are worse things to be than lame.

RIP Scotty.
