Topic: Nicky Hopkins 2nd released in Europe Return to archive
13th July 2004 09:40 AM
VoodooChileInWOnderl Nicky Hopkins' second album was just officialy released in Europe, CBS 610328 Austria in a great digipack presentation.

This is second official release, the first was in Japan.

This album is great, not as great as his last one but by far was more popular because of the musicians involved (Mick Taylor, Bobby Keys, George Harrison, etc)

If you want to see all about this album including musicians, lyrics, audio clips just visit our Rocks Off space for Nicky and go to his solo work session and the audio

jpenn11 According to Nico, MT played on these songs and Jerry (?)Williams sang on at least one:

- Dolly (Nicky Hopkins/Jerry Williams) -Mike Egan and Chris Rea on acoustic guitars
- Speed On (Nicky Hopkins/Jerry Williams) -Jerry Williams on vocals, George Harrison on guitar, Bobby Keys, Jim Horn & Jim Price on horns
- Lawyers Lament (Nicky Hopkins/Jerry Williams)
Line-up: MT (gtr)/Nicky Hopkins (p, voc)/Klaus Voormann (bass)/Ray Cooper(perc)/Prairie Prince (dr)/Del Newman (strings arranger)

Nicky and Taylor toured in 1992, but of Nicky's stuff I think they did only an instrumental called "Edward", which also was on this album.

VoodooChileInWOnderl Hey Mac Daddy this is for you (100% Jerry Garca related as he made several covers of this song live some of them with Nicky on stage)

http://rocksoff.org/nicky-hopkins-refugeeblues-complete.mp3

I need help in some portions of the lyrics (see below)

1. REFUGEE BLUES (Click for MP3)
(Music Nicky and Dolly Hopkins / Lyrics Dolly Hopkins and John Edwards)

You say this city got two zones
Some live in mansions, some live in homes
We want to feel that we're free
But we feel like refugees

We want to wander, we want to roam
We'd like to go just where we please
We'd like to know somewhere is home
But we're just like refugees

Went to immigration, they turned and said
Without a passport, you're officially dead
Saw a smartly dressed dude with a badge walk in
He's all right, he's got a security pin

When the United Nations they turn and say
You become you're officially dead (?)
It isn't always easy, we're always burden on the street
Telling you lies, treat you like refugees

We want to wander, we want to roam
We'd like to go just where we please
We'd like to know somewhere is home
But we're just like refugees

We're always on the streets
When you're refugees

jpenn11 Thanks for posting this Voodoo. Great stuff.

Sounds to me like:

[When]_With_ the United Nations they turn and [say]_said_
You become you're officially [dead]_red_
_Well_ It isn't always easy, [we're]_they're_ always burden on the street
Telling you lies, treat you like refugees

By the way:

Refugee Blues by WH Auden

Say this city has ten million souls,
Some are living in mansions, some are living in holes:
Yet there's no place for us, my dear, yet there's no place
for us.
Once we had a country and we thought it fair,
Look in the atlas and you'll find it there:
We cannot go there now, my dear, we cannot go there
now.

In the village churchyard there grows an old yew,
Every spring it blossoms anew;
Old passports can't do that, my dear, old passports can't
do that.

The consul banged the table and said:
"If you've got no passport you're officially dead";
But we are still alive, my dear, but we are still alive.

Went to a committee; they offered me a chair;
Asked me politely to return next year:
But where shall we go today, my dear, but where shall we
go today?

Came to a public meeting; the speaker got up and said:
"If we let them in, they will steal our daily bread";
He was talking of you and me, my dear, he was talking of
you and me.

Thought I heard the thunder rumbling in the sky;
It was Hitler over Europe, saying: "They must die";
We were in his mind, my dear, we were in his mind.

Saw a poodle in a jacket fastened with a pin,
Saw a door opened and a cat let in:
But they weren't German Jews, my dear, but they weren't
German Jews.

Went down to the harbour and stood upon the quay,
Saw the fish swimming as if they were free:
Only ten feet away, my dear, only ten feet away.

Walked through a wood, saw the birds in the trees;
They had no politicians and sang at their ease:
They weren't the human race, my dear, they weren't the
human race.

They played three shows as "Tumbling Dice" in Florida, the band included Nicky Hopkins, Mick Taylor, Bobby Keys

A bootleg is available, you can find information at the great website by Megaton our friend in Japan
