Topic: Songs that would've sounded weird in '81 Return to archive
15th July 2007 08:48 PM
Mel Belli For the most part, I dig the sound of that tour: furiously, cocaine-ily uptempo, twangy, punk-rocky. Fifties gems like "Twenty Flight Rock" and Motown's "Going to a Go-Go" worked perfectly, as, obviously, did the contemporary Some Girls-ER-Tattoo-You stuff. With hit albums at their back, they didn't feel compelled to unearth a lot of old stuff, Under My Thumb and LSTNT excepted.

But, for the same reason, I have a hard time imagining what some of those songs would've sounded like: Sympathy, Gimme Shelter, Midnight Rambler, etc -- the Taylor-era material, basically.

What else would have sounded strange?

On the flip side, I think Live With Me would've worked well on that tour. And Connection. And anything Chuck Berry -- Carol, Little Queenie, etc.

?

Gimme Shelter I think Emotional Rescue would have sounded strange even though it came out a year before.

THey did Angie in 82 - and it was very good

The songs mentioned in the first post wouldn't make sense in 81/82.
I'd think Rocks Off would have been terrific though

Heavy electric guitar by Keith and Ronnie - riffing instead of gentle playing, it was quite a version indeed

I love listening to boots from the 1981 tour . Whenever I hear ANYTHING off of " Hampton '81 " I get that " The Party Has Just Started Feeling " . Indeed , I hear barkers and see colored balloons falling down all around me ....... and you's ?!

patioaintdry Angie was great in '82. Listen to Shattered in Europe (? The Naples show) for proof.

Midnight Rambler would've been interesting in 81-82.

aladdinstory Fingerprint File wouldn't have fit the sound of that tour.

Too bad they didn't play either Summer Romance or Where the Boys Are off ER in 81 or 82. I think the former in particular would've cooked live at that time.

Speaking of Rocks Off, IT should be played every tour IMHO, surprised they've never used it as an opening song. It would be perfect.
