Stones Shun Elton
Band turns down John in Colorado, celebrates with Ringo in L.A.
Unlike a Rolling Stone: Elton John wanted to give a party for the Stones at Caribou Ranch, outside Denver, but he's not currently in favor with the band. In Ft. Collins, John, dressed in a cowboy hat and L.A. Dodgers windbreaker, joined the Stones onstage for their opening number, "Honky Tonk Women," saying it was the only tune he knew. He reappeared after several songs and remained until "Midnight Rambler," ten numbers later. Billy Preston and Ian Stewart, whose accessibility to the keyboards was at times hampered by John's noodling, were reportedly upset, as was Keith Richard. After the show, the Stones turned down Elton's offer to take a helicopter to the ranch for a barbeque.
A few days earlier the Stones had shown up for a more intimate gathering of 400 or so after their Friday show at L.A.'s Forum. Host was Atlantic Records, who borrowed what Diana Ross and husband Bob Ellis (manager of Preston) call home. Most of the action took place on the astroturfed tennis court, as Liza Minnelli, Jill St. John, Donald Carmel (codirector of Jagger's film Performance) and gate-crasher George Hamilton IV wielded rackets. Other guests: Elton, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Neil Diamond and Sonny Bono. Jackson Browne, inadvertently left off the guest list, was turned away.
The Stones also made it to Ringo's Beverly Hills home four days before that to help him celebrate his 35th birthday. Other guests included Keith Moon -- who'd arranged for a skywriter to spell out "Happy Birthday Ringo" that day -- Harrison and Richard Perry, Ringo's producer. The evening kicked off when Ringo tried to blow out the rigged candles (the kind that can't be blown out) on his cake. Failing, he took a plate and smashed them out. Afterwards, Nancy Andrews, Ringo's girlfriend, explained the no-no man's behavior: "He's still nine years old."
