steel driving hammer The Rolling Stones “circus” is coming to France
Friday, July 4th

Paris (AFP) – The international tour of the Rolling Stones started in September in the USA and is now in France for 4 concerts, Marseilles on July 5th, and Paris on July 7, 9 and 11, successively in Bercy (the first time they ever play there), Stade de France and then Olympia.

This new tour of the rock veterans from the sixties – one of the very few bands of this “golden age” to be still going on – goes together with their compilation album “40 licks” issued last fall.

This 40 songs anthology (including 36 classics) gives an overview of their 4 decades as loyal servants to rock music, with “Sir” (since June 15, 2002) Mick Jagger, 60 years of age on July 26, Keith Richards, 59, alter ego of the exuberant singer, still has not been made “lord”, Charlie Watts, 62, the elegant drummer, and Ron Wood, 56, the everlasting “rookie”.

The Rolling Stones have become an institution and public goes to their shows to live the glorious past again. This is now more than twenty years that the four billionaire buccaneers have not got a real hit (in fact since 1981 with “Start me Up”).
People go to their shows to see them and listen to their portfolio of songs which includes many hits (“Satisfaction” is still on the set list 40 years after its creation, “Ruby Tuesday”, “Miss You”, “Honky Tonk Woman”…).

They survived many casualties (specially Brian Jones on July 2, 1969, at the age of 27), they also survived many fashions and bad albums.

The European leg of this new tour started on June 4 in Münich. For this tour the band chose to play in theatres of various sizes, which will allow them to deliver a partly different set list every night.

For that purpose they rehearsed about 150 songs. There will be gigs for “large audiences” in stadiums featuring the most famous songs, and gigs for “happy few” just like at the Olympia, offering a more specialized set list.

In Paris, all tickets for the three concerts were put on sale at the same time on Dec. 11 : 15,000 tickets for Bercy (from 85 to 145 Euros per ticket), 60,000 tickets at Stade de France (between 57 and 117 Euros), and only around 1,000 (on a total capacity of 2,000) for the Olympia theatre (56 Euros each ticket).

Bercy tickets and the allotment for the Olympia theatre that had been put at disposal for fans were sold within a few hours.

The Rolling Stones are quite familiar with the Olympia theatre where they used to play in their early times during the 60’s. They also gave a “surprise” concert there on July 3, 1995. However this will be their first gig at the Olympia since this theatre reopened on Nov. 13, 1997 after a major refurbishment.

The North-American leg of the Rolling Stones tour is rumoured to have generated a global revenue of ca. 100 million Dollars, says the specialized magazine Pollstar.
