Jerry Stone is waiting (oh, yeah, oh, yeah). Waiting for the Rolling Stones to come out of the somewhere of their rented houses and their rehearsal space in Toronto and play a set or two in the Canadian club he has created in their image. That would be Stones Place, of course, a funky, 500-square-metre den of would-be iniquity that Stone, now 57, opened more than three years ago on the farthest reaches of Queen Street West and stuffed with two semi trailers of Stonesy memorabilia.

Keith, Mick and the gang have been to the Ontario capital to do this and that at least two times since Jerry's venue opened, and now they're in town again -- Keith reportedly flew in from New York Thursday evening -- to work up material for their 2005-06 world tour. But in all that time the lads have never seen fit to visit their Parkdale Shangri-La.

Stone, a Belgian native who spent a lot of time circulating in London's rock scene during the sixties and seventies, admitted this week that he's "feeling the pressure" to finally snare the Stones. "I told Keef we were gonna kidnap 'em this time," he says with a raspy chuckle. This happened in early May when Stone went to Manhattan to attend the mini street concert and press conference the band held to announce the upcoming tour.

"All the [Stones'] techies want to play, so that's on," remarked Stone, who claims to be on intimate terms with Richards and guitarist Ronnie Wood. And he's signed Stones sidemen Bernard Fowler and Blondie Chaplin to do a gig at the place July 30. "So that's probably when we'll do the kidnapping." The way Jerry figures, it's time: The band's already played smaller venues here, including the Palais Royale, the El Mocambo and the Horseshoe, so why not Stones Place, which has room for 260? It's gonna be touch and go, though: The Stones reportedly plan to rehearse in Toronto for no more than three weeks, not the five or six of previous visits.
