Pre-match build-up:
England are going to have to endure fierce heat as they continue their Euro 2004 campaign against Switzerland in Coimbra.

Temperatures pitchside soared past the 100C degrees mark as they prepared to try and bounce back from the opening defeat against France in Lisbon.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was among the spectators, casting an eye over Highbury duo Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole.

Coimbra was awash with red as England and Switzerland supporters mixed outside the ground, with no apparent incidents.

stewed & Keefed England 3-0 Switzerland

Wayne Rooney inspired England to victory over a dogged Switzerland.
He became the youngest player to score in a European Championship after he guided a first-half header past Joerg Stiel from a Michael Owen cross.

On the hour Bernt Haas was red-carded and soon after Rooney's rifled shot hit the post and richocheted off keeper Steil's head into the net.

Late on Steven Gerrard arrived to score a third when he popped up to scoop home Gary Neville's cross from the right.

The early signs for England were distinctly unpromising.

Sven-Goran Eriksson's side struggled to retain possession, while Switzerland looked dangerous probing England's left flank.

Even more worringly, a series of set-pieces taken by the left-footed Hakan Yakin gave England's defence all sorts of problems.

In that edgy opening phase, England's best attacking chance was Rooney's futile chase for a Lampard pass, which ended up with the Everton youngster picking up a yellow card for his lunge at Swiss goalkeeper Stiel.

Completely against the run of the play, England took the lead.

Gerrard burst forward and, as he was tackled, he released the ball to Beckham.

The England captain quickly flighted a diagonal pass to Owen, who picked out Rooney with his cross and the youngster wrote himself into the history books with a powerful header.

The goal served to sharpen England's passing and movement and just past the half-hour Ashley Cole's low cross from the left just eluded both Owen and Rooney.

Even so, the Swiss - prompted by Hakan Yakin's passing and vision - continued to probe a nervous English defence and just before the break the Stuttgart midfielder went close from another free-kick.

The introduction of youngster Daniel Gygax further pepped up Switzerland's attack.

However, just before the hour Koebi Kuhn's side suffered a blow when Haas was dismissed after he picked up two yellow cards in the space of 10 minutes.

Switzerland's hopes evaporated with Haas' sending off.

More good work from Rooney led to the Everton striker rattling the post with a rifled shot - an effort that landed up in the net after richocheting off the unfortunate Stiel.

And in the closing stages Gerrard made it three when he forced Neville's cross past Stiel.

stewed & Keefed Sorry it's a bit late.

Croatia 2-2 France

France had David Trezeguet to thank for earning a point against Croatia.
The reigning champions looked to be heading for a comfortable win when Igor Tudor deflected a Zinedine Zidane free-kick into his own net.

But after a lacklustre first half, Croatia went into the lead through a Milan Rapaic penalty and a fine strike from forward Dado Prso.

But Trezeguet put France back on level terms when he took advantage of a defensive mix up to slot home.

The draw takes France clear at the top of Group B and only needing a point in their final game against Switzerland to qualify for the knockout stages.

France began the game in dominant mood, with Thierry Henry firing in a shot on the turn that flashed just wide.

Croatia set their stall out early to try and stifle their illustrious opponents.

But their gameplan fell apart when France took the lead midway through the opening period.

The French were well worthy of the goal but they needed a large slice of fortune.

Zidane fired in a dangerous free-kick that Tudor tried half-heartedly to clear but he only succeeded in deflecting it past keeper Tomislav Butina.

KEY MOMENTS
23 mins: Zidane's free-kick is deflected into his own net by Tudor
48 mins: Rapaic scores from the spot after a foul by Silvestre
52 mins: Prso fires Croatia into a shock lead
64 mins: Trezeguet gets France back on level terms
All the action as it happened
It was Zidane's third goal of the tournament, making him the top scorer, and it enabled France to up the tempo.

As usual, Zidane was at the heart of everything as he toyed with Croatia in what began to resemble a training-ground kickabout.

Just before half-time, France should have doubled their lead.

Henry swung in a corner that Zidane nonchalantly flicked with the outside of his boot into the path of William Gallas, who failed to finish what would have been a wonderful move by missing a header in front of goal.

But within seven minutes of the restart the game had turned on its head.

Mikael Silvestre bundled Rosso Dovani over in the box with a clumsy challenge and referee Kim Milton Nielsen pointed to the spot.

Rapaic stepped up and fired past Fabien Barthez, who had been virtually a spectator up until that point.

Four minutes later Croatia went in front through Prso.

Zidane was an inspiration for France
The striker did well to control a deep cross and when the recalled Marcel Desailly made a hash of an attempted clearance Prso was quick to ram the ball home.

The goal led to the French players coming together in a huddle and Zidane offering his team-mates some words of encouragement.

Whatever was said must have done the trick as they were soon back on level terms - but again they had the Croatian defence to thank.

A poor backpass from Robert Kovac put Butina under pressure from Trezeguet and his attempt at a clearance hit the forward, leaving him with the simple task of sidefooting into an empty net.

Substitute Robert Pires and Henry were both denied by Butina in the dying stages.

But Ivica Mornar also came close to stealing the three points for Croatia when he blazed over from close range in stoppage time.

Denmark are boosted by the return of winger Jesper Gronkjaer, who may challenge Dennis Rommedahl on the left.

Thomas Gravesen is also available after suspension, but coach Morten Olsen has hinted he may not play.

Bulgaria have midfield injury worries - Velizar Dimitrov (calf strain) and Marian Hristov (ankle).

If both are fit, the only change is likely to be Dimitrov, in an attacking role behind Dimitar Berbatov, replacing striker Zoran Jankovich.

stewed & Keefed Bulgaria 0-2 Denmark

Jon Dahl Tomasson scored Denmark's first goal of Euro 2004 to ease them to victory against a dismal Bulgaria side who are now out of the competition.
AC Milan striker Tomasson tapped home after a piercing Thomas Gravesen pass found Martin Jorgensen, who unselfishly squared for his team-mate to score.

Jesper Gronkjaer joined the squad late because of the death of his mother and added a second with a controlled shot.

Bulgaria were poor and Stilian Petrov was sent-off to compound their misery.

Denmark dominated from the start and created the first chance of the game after five minutes when the pacy Dennis Rommedahl raced onto a ball down the left and looped a cross to the far post for Jorgensen.

He took two touches to control and shoot but his effort was saved and Ebbe Sand also saw his follow-up shot blocked by Bulgaria keeper Zdravko Zdravkov.

An out-swinging cross to the far post again had Bulgaria in trouble and Jorgensen was set to launch a header toward goal before left-back Ivailo Petkov crucially hooked the ball clear.

Denmark carried on in the same manner as they did against Italy in the opening group game when they could not add the finishing touch to their possession and build-up play.

They were dealt a blow when Rommedahl went off injured, but that signalled the arrival of the equally potent Gronkjaer, who missed the Italy game because of the death of his mother.

Gravesen was the next Danish culprit to squander a chance when he could only strike a tame shot across the face of goal.

Gronkjaer had received a vociferous welcome from the Danish fans and made an immediate impact on the game.

Bulgaria's Martin Petrov shows his agony after a missed chance

He saw a low shot saved by Zdravkov before Sand headed wide from close range in a game where it was all one-way traffic towards the Bulgaria goal.

Denmark's frustration was only growing and Tomasson rounding Zdravkov only to shoot into the side-netting did not help matters.

Bulgaria were poor but almost delivered a sucker punch when Marian Hristov headed just wide after keeper Thomas Sorensen dropped a catch.

A one-two between Hristov and Martin Petrov carved open the Danish defence but Petrov produced a weak shot straight at Sorensen.

Denmark's pressure finally paid dividends when Gravesen threaded a first-time ball through Bulgaria's defence and Jorgensen squared for Tomasson to tap in.

Bulgaria were now playing to stay in the tournament and, despite being more positive in the second half, there was little urgency about their play.

Jankovic shot just wide in a rare Bulgaria attempt as they meekly went out of Euro 2004 which saw them lose 5-0 to Sweden in their first game.

Denmark sat on their lead and, with the match at 1-0, gave Bulgaria a chance of snatching a undeserved equaliser.

But Bulgaria's hopes fade when captain Petrov was red-carded for a second bookable offence after arguing over a free-kick which was not awarded.

Gronkjaer shot home to complete an easy win for Denmark, who now face Sweden in their final Group C game.

84 mins: Stilian Petrov is sent-off
90 mins: Gronjkaer scores to end a sweeping move

stewed & Keefed Italy 1-1 Sweden

A late goal from Zlatan Ibrahimovic earned Sweden a draw and put a major dent in Italy's Euro 2004 hopes.

The Italians went in front when Christian Panucci crossed for Antonio Cassano to guide a glancing header into the bottom corner.

Christian Vieri and Alessandro Del Piero missed chances to seal the game.

But Sweden threatened late on and Mattias Jonson went close before Ibrahimovic scored with an outrageous flick after a goalmouth scramble.

Italy will go into their final game against Bulgaria knowing even a win might not be enough to keep them in the tournament.

Knowing defeat would end their Euro 2004 hopes, Italy cast aside their usual defensive instincts and threw men forward in numbers.

Within three minutes they had threatened the Swedish goal, Del Piero finding Vieri with a long ball and he outmuscled Erik Edman.

But, after doing the hard work, he was unable to produce a shot on goal.

Sweden responded with Ibrahimovic releasing Freddie Ljungberg, who returned the favour with a neat backheel but the big striker wasted the chance by firing over from a decent position.

But it was a rare moment of promise for the Swedes as they struggled to contain a persistent and inventive Italian attack.

Vieri headed over from a good position and Del Piero sidefooted wide after Gianluca Zambrotta had done well down the left.

When Italy did manage to find the target they found Andreas Isaksson a tough obstacle to overcome.

The keeper pulled off a fine save to push around the post a Del Piero shot that was deflected off Olof Mellberg and was heading for the bottom corner.

Both full-backs were given licence to attack and Zambrotta found space on the left to cross for Vieri who again headed over the top.

When the deadlock was finally broken it came from Panucci, who was causing as many problems for Sweden down the right as Zambrotta was the left.

The full-back cut inside Ljungberg and Edman and put in an inviting cross that an unmarked Cassano beautifully directed into the bottom corner.

On the stroke of half time the pair almost combined for a second goal as Panucci crossed but this time Cassano headed straight at Isaksson.

Henrik Larsson finally got a sniff of goal early in the second half when he found space inside the box, but he fired a wild shot into the crowd.

Italy were not quite the attacking force in the second period but they still carved out chances, with Vieri again going close with a shot from another Panucci centre.

Italy looked headed for victory until late on
Del Piero also headed over and went close with an ambitious flick.

But Italy played a dangerous game late on as Sweden pushed forward and Jonson twice went close to grabbing an equaliser after being set up by Larsson.

The substitute saw a drilled effort brilliantly kept out by Gianluigi Buffon and then he headed over.

But Ibrahimovic equalised when the striker beat Buffon to the ball and flicked it with the outside of his boot into the top corner.

There was still time for Vieri to snatch all three points but again he headed over the bar.
