Ten Thousand Motels 'Ultimate chick flick' proves a surprise hit

TIM CORNWELL

A DOCUMENTARY about migrating penguins has stunned Hollywood by triumphing at the box office after a series of big-budget flops.

March of the Penguins, a French film made for less than £5 million, follows a group of emperor penguins on the arduous, annual 70-mile trek to their breeding grounds.

The wintry saga of avian romance is promising to be one of the summer's biggest "sleeper" hits in the US.

It opened in just a few cinemas across the US two weeks ago, but pulled overflow crowds.

It has sold more tickets per showing than War of the Worlds, Steven Spielberg's big-budget version of HG Wells' classic story starring Tom Cruise.

March of the Penguins - dubbed "the ultimate chick flick" - was made over 13 months by Luc Jacquet, an animal biologist who followed the birds around Antarctica with a 35mm camera.

The film tells how a group of penguins trek through terrifying storms to pair off and procreate.

The females then leave their mates to guard the eggs between their feet on the ice as they head back to the ocean in search of food for the chick. The US version has a voiceover by Morgan Freeman

Jumping Jack The penguins were far more interesting than Spielberg's piece of crap. When is Hollywood actually going to write a little script to go with hundreds of millions in special effects? He should be terribly ashamed. Tom Cruise is out of his mind and will find it very difficult to find parts he finances himself like MI3.

Jumping Jack Great special effects, no plot. Not worth a full price ticket IMHO.
