Topic: Stones on the 4th - 1972 Return to archive

kmc Washington, D.C. - July 4, 1972 - drive down from NY with a friend to see the Stones at RFK Stadium. Arrive in the morning, do some sightseeing. Think we’re smart, parking about a mile away to avoid the stadium parking lot crunch. Walking to the stadium in the late afternoon we notice the neighborhoods are getting a bit “seedy.” My friend and I had long hair and sort of stood out. Some local youths hanging on a corner across the street say to us, “You guys got any tickets to sell for the concert tonight?” Since they don’t exactly look like your typical Stones’ fans, we say no and start walking a bit faster. Then we hear, “Well, give us your tickets!” We take off running full blast. The others - there were about a dozen - pretended to give chase and just stopped laughing. Somehow it wasn’t that funny to us at the time and we made it to the stadium in no time.

Stage was set up in the middle of the field and we got up pretty close to the front. As the sun went down, besides the smell of herbs, one would catch whiffs of tear gas as apparently people without tickets were storming the barricades. Read about that later in the paper.

In darkness, the Stones took the stage. What was unique was seeing Mick Jagger escorted by two Revolutionary War figures, long coats, like the famous flag bearer and drummer. Mick himself had on a tri-cornered hat to start the show.

Typical setlist for that tour. Great show. Neat thing back then was all the new “Exile” numbers. No encore with Stevie Wonder yet.

Needless to say, we managed to hitch a ride back to our car and were already thinking about the shows at Madison Square Garden later in the month.

texile i'm jealous.....i envy you so much it hurts;
was the performance as intense as the live boots indicate, or am i just romanticizing 1972?

kmc though i preferred the '69 tour for its "innocence, fun, we got something to prove attitude" and song selection, the stones never played better than they did in '72. they were like an unstoppable machine, firing on all pistons and working their asses off on stage. i also think the newfound celebrity and adulation and the wealth of quality new material to choose from added to it. jagger, especially, who never mails in a show, was at his best.
the tapes do not lie.

Jumping Jack Saw the 78 4th of July show in Buffalo. Pretty good by 78 standards, but paled in comparision to the 75 tour.

texile yeah kmc - they were a hard, driving fury in 72...like that truck chasing dennis weaver in duel....... or like a runaway train, and everybody was at thier peak.
ycagwyw from welcome to new york is the greatest example of the stones greatness - its sublime.
and all i have is boots.
