Topic: 51 Greatest films that suck Return to archive
2nd July 2007 07:02 PM
MrPleasant Ok. They don't suck. At least they don't seem to suck. Maybe I'll remember some others. (I repeat: THESE films do not suck. I love them.)

Too much time on my hands? Yes. BTW: if some other people bother to post their selections, maybe I'll count the ten most popular movies. (If somebody replies, of course.)Maybe, in a week or so. If I don't die from diarrhea.

(The list is, more or less, cronological. I'm not sure about the exact dates for a lot of the films. That's the reason for the angry red face. THAT'S WHY. :angry

The gold rush
L'age d'or (i hope I spelled it right)
The general
City lights
La strada
The 400 blows
La dolce vita
Dr. Strangelove (...)
Hud
A hard day's night
Persona
Pierrot le fou
The graduate
Easy rider (yes it's kinda tedious and the actors aren't great, except for Nicholson. But this isn't a hippie movie: from the right perspective, it turns out that it's an anti-hippie movie. That's why Fonda says, at the end, that "they" had blown it.)
Katzelmacher
Faces
2001, a space odyssey
Night of the living dead
Midnight cowboy
M.A.S.H.
Five easy pieces
The last picture show
Harold and Maude
Fat city
Monty Python and the holy grail
Kings of the road
McCabe & Mrs. Miller
The go-between
The conversation
The mirror
Frankenstein Jr.
Dersu Uzala
The last woman
Chinatown
Amarcord
Love and death ("No, you must be Don Francisco's sister!") (Sonja: There are many different kinds of love, Boris. There's love between a man and a woman; between a mother and son...
Boris: Two women. Let's not forget my favorite. )
American graffiti
Annie Hall
The kids are alright
Hair
Raging bull
The thing
Raiders of the lost ark
Fanny and Alexander
Nostalghia
Possession (NOT the movie with Gwyneth Paltrow)
Paris, Texas
After hours
Blue velvet
Tampopo
Wings of desire
Goodfellas

Bla blah: films that I want to see:
Nashville
The Long Goodbye
Celine and Julie go boating
Hitler: a film from Germany (... I just found out that I can see it here, apparently:
http://www.syberberg.de/Syberberg2/Hitler_full_eng_QT2.html )
Chelsea girls
Renaldo and Clara
The Asthenic Syndrome
The Saragossa Manuscript (Luis Buñuel loved this film. He also claimed that the pope was jewish, though.)
Go to hell! (name of the movie.)
Heimat
a lot of films from Kurosawa and Godard
Berlin Alexanderplatz (and Fassbinder's movies in general)
Dog Star Man (on acid)
The Vanishing (not the remake)
Funny Games (which apparently will be "remade", in english. Why can't people just read subtitles?)
Daisies (about two sexy señoritas, who decide that the world is so fucked up, that they decide to have some fun in life.)

Special feature I: films that I can't stand!
The Terminal (what a bunch of horrid crap. Why is it so long? Why the stupid coda? The actors are great and the director "knows" what he's doing. But why is it so corny? I was drunk while I watched it and it made me want to pass out.)
The sound of music
La pulquería (mexican movie. A "comedy" which I found insulting, not because of its vugarity, but because there's a weird rape sequence which, apparently, was meant to "arouse". Sad.)
Most Adam Sandler's movies (they are not funny. He's not funny, on the screen. The one he did with Jack Nicholson wasn't bad, though. Why doesn't he come up with a script based on "The Psychotic Legend Of Uncle Donnie" - from one of his comedy albums?)

Special feature II: unintentional funny moments:
The godfather (the music in the baptism/killing scene. The hammy organ cracks me up.)
12 monkeys (the scene where Bruce Willis opens the trunk of a car - where he had locked up Madeleine Stowe. Her response? she beats him up!)

(I need a girlfriend, I know. But only if she can cook.)

Saint Sway I thought "Deep Throat" was the greatest film that sucked?
3rd July 2007 11:07 AM
Dan The Conversation is one of my all time favorite movies but no one I know seems to like it. Other than that, I am not a big fan of serious movies. Or really any movies. Documentaries and horror movies, that's about it.

There's just "movies". Period. IMO. Good and bad.

"Serious" movies usually suck.

Ten Thousand Motels Some more movies that suck..........

That one with Arnold S. and Danny DeVito....TWINS was it?
KING KONG w/Jessica Lang and Bridges
BEVERLEY HILLS COP II - I was OK. They should have quit while they were ahead.
TOP GUN - well, anything with Tom Cruise in it is bound to suck.

Can t remember the tittle but a friend of mine burned a "best of" 70's porn movies soundtrack and it killed.
Very psychedelic as you can imagine.

Back to topic, I recently vomited on "war of the worlds" with Tom Cruise and "Casino Royale" too. But I m not a big movie fan, I do prefer Supertramp.

Yes, "Twins". It's not too bad. "Aqua Velva?"

King Kong - I haven't seen any version of it.

Beverly Hills Cop II wasn't great; the next sequel was boring, though, IMO.

And Cruise: if he only wouldn't want an Oscar so badly, maybe people wouldn't hate him so much. Eyes Wide Shut is a very underrated film. It lacks ideas. But good films aren't necessarily about "ideas", they are about entertainment and technique. And Eyes Wide Shut is about fucking. Plain and simple. But, yes, Top Gun is hilariously gay.

I also like handjobs.

I am not a big movie buff at all but they are somewhat more enjoyable if it's about the type of thing that couldn't conceivably happen in real life. Gangster movies, cop movies, war movies etc were good in the 70's but most, even the acclaimed ones made later on just aren't very interesting to me.

Thinking about what you said, I believe that when a documentary is good it can be both funny and scary. Same thing with a good horror movie (something from David Cronenberg or Roman Polanski): when they're good (The Fly, Rosemary's Baby), they're funny at times. There's not a lot of distance between comedy and horror, and, again, the best documentaries can inspire extreme reactions: The Thin Blue Line, Capturing The Friedmans, Hearts Of Darkness, My Best Fiend .

Bad films, serious films, try to manipulate with sentimentalism at hand. They're not funny or scary: they are bland.
