Topic: Review: Dave Alvin and The Guilty Men June 16 & 18, 2004 Return to archive
22nd June 2004 02:14 AM
WildBillGrover Dave Alvin and The Guilty Men: June 16, 2004 at The Outland Ballroom, Springfield, MO ($10), and June 18, 2004 at Off Broadway, St. Louis, Missouri ($15)

With the wife due to deliver our first child in two months and related travel restrictions on me soon to be in effect, I decided that I should see Dave Alvin and the Guilty Men more than once on their new tour, so I witnessed them Wednesday night in Springfield, Missouri and Friday night in St. Louis. If my buddy Jimbo Jockstrap had not gone with me to Springfield, I was going to see Dave and The Guilty Men also in Kansas City on Thursday and spend the night there at the home of Billy the Bull Kid.

Well, both nights were really satisfying and Id like to see Dave again on this five-month tour thats in part to support his new album, Ashgrove, on his new label, Yep Roc. The set lists (below) were similar for the two shows, but there were some interesting differences.

Jimbo and I got into his Caddy Wednesday about 5:45 to drive the 190 miles to Springfield to just turn around two miles later because his alternator was not charging. We then got into my Ford Exploder and were back on the road about 6:20. It took us exactly three hours to get to Springfield despite lots of KGB and having to slow down for one heavy thunderstorm. The area around Springfield is beautiful with hillbilly mountains and forests.

The Outland Ballroom was not nearly sold out that night; I had two tickets held at the door just in case. The St. Louis gig at Off Broadway, a few blocks south of Budweiser Central, was much easier for me to travel to, and not sold out, but I had a ticket waiting there for me too.

Dave started the Springfield show with Ashgrove, the title track from his new album. At the St. Louis show, something happened Ive never seen before at the 20+ Dave shows Ive been to: Dave was not on stage for the first number. Instead, his right hand man, Chris Gaffney, sang some song about Albuquerque before Dave came out. I was thinking, does Dave think hes one of those blues guys or mamas who needs a warn-up tune or two done by the band before he can come out? Or was he perhaps stuck in the bathroom? Probably neither guess was true.

However, the tune Ashgrove was late in the show in St. Louis as a very cool second part of a medley with Somewhere in Time also from the new disk. And no, this aint no jam band they just like to give us unique live musical experiences.

In the St. Louis show, Dave started with one of his more popular, crowd pleasing up-tempo songs, Out in California, instead of a number from the new album.

Romeos Escape and So long Baby, Goodbye both classics from the Dave Alvin songbook were done as a super cool medley in both shows. At the Springfield show during Romeos Escape, Dave changed the lyrics to say, the cowgirl took Dale Watson home. In the St. Louis show, he changed the lyrics to say that the cowgirl too Wayne Hancock home. I thought those were pretty cool nods to some of our trad. country heroes.

Daves version of Rio Grande has a much different feel to it than co-writer Tom Russells version. Thats cool, albeit interesting.

I was quite pleased to hear Dave play Wanda and Duane at both gigs. He kept it to just that song both nights, but if you are really lucky, he will give you the full jaded lovers soap opera experience by throwing in part of Mickey Gillys The Girls All Look Better at Closing Time and the Doris Day hit, Que Ser, Ser to paint a graphic medley.

Mr. Alvin has a new Fender Stratocaster that I for some reason think just does not sound as bad-ass as his white early-60s one that he used to take on tour, but maybe hes keeping the good one behind lest anything unduly negative happen to it.

I havent analyzed in depth the tunes on his new album, Ashgrove, but I can tell you that most of the songs have a very bluesy groove to them.

The Guilty Men are for the most part different than the supporting musicians on the new album. Back from previous tours are the fabulous Bobby Lloyd Hicks on drums, Greg Boaz on bass, Joe Terry on keyboards, and Chris Gaffney on acoustic guitar, accordion and back-up vocals. Joe Terry did a fantastic solo on East Virginia Blues at the St. Louis gig. I dont know why Rick Shea is not with them on Telecaster and steel guitar, but hes been replaced by someone at least as talented: Chris Miller from Austin, Texas, who in my opinion can play blues-type of stuff with more of a bluesy feeling than Rick Shea. Rick may be better at the country leads on the Telecaster.

Crowd pleaser Fourth of July was part of the encore at the Springfield gig (and hour and 40 minutes overall), but part of the regular set in the two-hour St. Louis show.

I recommend that you go out and catch this band on their current tour whether you have been a fan of the Blasters and Dave Alvin for many years, or have never seen either band before. Daves an excellent singer, great songsmith, exciting guitarist of several styles and the overall package with sufficient poise and stage presence makes him a very capable performer. Support the bands that live and die every night in bars and nightclubs!
