Just being deep on my birthday:
Besides the Stones in the early rocknblues days (up to when Sgt Pepper changed the scene) there
where bands in UK close to be - generally speaking - as good as Stones.
Pretty Things, Them, Animals & Downliner Sect. They all did pretty good. Just listen to
"Pretty Things - I can never say".
On the 4CD box "Nuggets" it's at least 15 songs by US bands, being excellent rockers as good
as most of what Stones recorded up to 1968.
If you like early Stones get the Nugget box, and listen to these ones:
Standells - Dirty water.
Shadows of the knight - Oh yeah.
Seeds - Pushin' too hard.
13th Floor Elevators - You're gonna miss me.
Count Five - Psychotic reaction.
Chocolate Watchband - Sweet young thing.
Brogus - I ain't no miracle worker.
Captain Beefheart - Diddy wah diddy.
Sonics - Strychnine.
Groupies - Primitive.
Lyrics - So what
Uniques - You ain't tuff.
Leaves - To many people
Other Half - Mr Pharmacist
Gonn - Blackout of gretely.
And the ultimate party song must be "The Premiers - Farmer John", if you can sit still to that one
you are a mummie!!
I always wondered why these bands didn't make it, what was the main reason? Was it Beggars Banquet
that knocked everything down and making it hard to recover?
I reckon from then on The Stones has always been "The greatest rocknroll band in the world". |
