Cocaine found on nearly all euro notes
By Kate Connolly in Berlin
(Filed: 26/06/2003)
Almost all euro bank notes have traces of cocaine, according to a study by German scientists.
Prof Fritz Sgel and a team from the Institute for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research in Nuremberg studied 700 euro notes from across the euro zone between January 2002 - the month the notes were launched - and last August.
Three per cent were found to be contaminated with an average of 0.4 microgrammes of cocaine particles, just days after the euro's launch, and this figure soared to 90 per cent in seven months.
The most highly contaminated notes, in the first study of its kind on euro notes, originated from Spain.
Rolled up banknotes are often used to sniff cocaine. Because the notes are made from pure cotton, cocaine crystals stick easily to them and quickly get passed on to other notes, according to experts.

TRIBUTE WHISKEY COMES WITH REGAL PRICE
June 24, 2003
CHICAGO SunTimes
BY LUCIO GUERRERO Staff Reporter
Who buys a $10,000 bottle of booze?
"It's not about the money or the taste," said Brian Rosen, owner of Sam's Wine and Spirits in Lincoln Park. "It's about the prestige. When his wealthy friends come over, he can show them what he bought."
If that sounds like you, here's your chance to pay a king's ransom for a Scotch made for a queen. Starting Wednesday, the makers of Chivas Regal are selling a $10,000, 50-year-old bottle of Scotch. The blended Scotch whiskey--aging since 1953 and called Royal Salute 50--is being sold to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. Don't look for it on store shelves. You'll have to ask at liquor stores.
The original Royal Salute was created in 1953 as a tribute to the new queen. It was meant to be sold at a well-aged 21 years old. But the company also set aside some of its stock for the 50th anniversary.
Now, 10 bottles of the 255 existing bottles of Royal Salute 50 are on--what else?--the Queen Elizabeth II cruise ship, making their way over from Scotland. They'll be sold in select U.S. markets, including Chicago.
Scotch whiskey typically is aged for about a decade or two before being sold. The older the whiskey, the more valuable. A bottle of Chivas' regular Royal Salute--aged for 21 years--sells for about $150 for a 750-milliliter bottle. A bottle of Scotland's Bowmore 40--aged 40 years--sells for more than $6,000 in Chicago. And it does sell. Rosen said he sold three bottles of Bowmore 40 last year.
A couple of bottles of really vintage stuff--1856 Macallan and 1929 Macallan--recently sold for over $15,000 each at Binny's Beverage Depot in Lake View, said Joe Congiusti, a "spirits specialist" there.

It's not that each and every bill with a trace of coke has literally been used to snort cocaine. Maybe only 0.001% of bills in circulation have actually been used, but when these are shuffled against other bills, a trace of coke gets passed on, and a trace from this new note to another and another.
"Because the notes are made from pure cotton, cocaine crystals stick easily to them and quickly get passed on to other notes". |

i read that.
but you'll be surprised how often urban myths end up in newspapers...
it might be true and if so the same is bound to happen with dollar bills.
however it still smells like BS to me.
then again, to be on the safe side i will now sniff all my bills before paying with them.
better safe (and high) than sorry! |
