Rolling Stones push boat out and charter £27,000 ferry
Last updated at 19:00pm on 11th June 2007

They may be practically OAPs but The Rolling Stones sure know how to cause a splash.

The rock 'n'roll superstars headlined the Isle of Wight festival and made sure everybody on the island knew they were coming.

Jagger, Richards and co spent a massive £27,000 chartering a car ferry from Portsmouth to the island - because they didn't want to be bothered by the locals, or the other bands for that matter

They ferried four huge trucks over with all of their equipment and brought a massive 200-strong entourage with them.

They didn't plan on hanging around either: the four-piece band and their celebrity pals hopped back on their specially chartered ferry after their gig and headed back to Keith Richards' house in West Wittering, West Sussex.

The superstars, who haven't played a festival in over 30 years, landed on the island yesterday afternoon at about 4pm and made their way to the site in Newport, where they closed off the Premiere Travel Inn on site for their dressing rooms.

All of the other bands were all kicked out and moved into specially erected tents away from the hotel so the Stones could have the entire place to themselves.

A source said: "It's the first time ever that one band has come in and told everybody else to get out. But it is the Stones, so what do you expect?".

The Stones also caused a scene by hiring their own security team, who were ruthless to say the least, and setting up their own pub - The Rattlesnake.

The source added: "Everywhere the Stones go on tour they set up their own pub called the Rattlesnake, it's a tradition.

"They built a special tented walkway from their dressing room to the bar so nobody could even catch a glimpse of them."

How very rock 'n' roll.

So what is a technical fault?

I think playing the wrong intro to the wrong song is more than a "technical fault". Is missing your cue and causing the vocal, and therefore, the timing to the entire song to be off a "technical fault"? How about forgetting the lyrics to everything but the chorus, so you sing the same verse three times? Is that merely a "technical fault"? How about when they are standing there, not playing their instrument at all, sorta just staring at it...like they are thinking, "what the hell am I supposed to do with this thingy?"...is that just a "technical fault"?

I highly doubt anyone here is complaining about a bum note or three. What we are talking about is much larger than that. Since 2005, the trainwreck has been a major feature at Stones shows. I saw it happen three times...and I only went to 5 shows on the ABB tour. To be fair...the other two shows were fabulous. But look at those odds...you have less than a 50/50 chance now, of seeing a good solid show. I don't bet the kind of money that The Stones want me to put up on the kind of odds The Stones are offering right now.

I'm not being "anal" at all. Especially when you consider that we all know the heights that The Stones are still capable of hitting. Yet for the most part, they prefer to go on auto-pilot...or worse...one or both guitar players decide to take a night off. On those nights they really are the punchline of all those bad wrinkly rocker jokes.

What frustrates me is that I KNOW that they can still really be "The World's Greatest Rock n Roll Band". And I KNOW that they can do it every night....if they wanted to do so. But it seems that they don't really want to do it very often. So we end up getting all these very mediocre, big slick Vegas revue shows that are all backing musicians, gimmick, and flash with no substance.

Sorry. That's not my bag. I don't like it and never will. If that is the direction that The Stones want to continue to travel towards, then they do it without me or my money. However, if they want to start kicking ass and taking names....every night...then I'll be there with bells on. Sadly, I think my wallet, bank account, and credit cards will stay safe from Rolling Stones Inc.

Dear Knight in Shining Armour : critics don't come harsher than me,if you searched around you would find plenty of old postings by myself saying exactly what you are saying, yes, they have in a great part become a tribute band to the band they used to be and churn out "the best of"-setlists, and yes, they rarely perform to the great technical heights they perhaps used to perform years ago, and yes, they are money grabbing bastards (what a bloody cheek, to complain about 2 quid water bottles, he obviously hasn't had to buy a concert ticket in a while...), and yes, they totally fucked up MY FAVOURITE FUCKING SONG by letting some brass-blowing twat attempt a solo that made the song resemble "Mary had a little lamb" or "Dancing Queen" but not the CYHMK that I love and that sends shivers down my spine...

BUT what I was talking about is that you cannot judge a performance and the effect it had on the audience and the audience's response and the whole experience by sitting at home and reading the setlist. My point is THEY DELIVERED "MAGIC" to 99.9% of the people that were there and would otherwise never had seen them had they not bought a ticket to see Kasabian or Muse or Snow Patrol. It was quite honestly AWESOME, in the true sense of the word, (before Americans adopted it and used it for everything and robbed it of its true meaning and "banalized" it),watching the show truly inspired awe, and you can see it on the faces of the kids on the shot of Mick walking down the catwalk. Or can't you?

Don't get me wrong, I only went to IOW because it was a mother-daughter-bonding exercise I thought would be a lovely thing to do before she gets so old she doesn't want anything to do with her mum anymore, and I bought the ticket ANYWAY, whether the Stones played or not, the fact they were playing was an added bonus, but my expectations were NIL. Caught them last year in Berlin with Gazza and was really disappointed, thought they were jaded and decided they would not get another cent from me for RSinc. The whole IOW ticket was cheaper than my seat in London in August, and I'm only going because I want to meet up with Gottorollme, PartyDollMeg and Gazza. Madrid I am going to because I'm spending four days with my lovely nephew in my favourite city (I lived there for two years and still have masses of friends there) having a long due "retox" holiday...My expectations for the shows are extremely low, but IF the shows are great, then that will be a bonus, I'm going to see my friends and to have a good time.

Back to the question of "are you being anal?". Yes, I think you are, but then often I am, too. It occurred to me on Sunday when I saw all those people with t-shirts from the different groups playing (about 25 acts?), that a music festival or rock concert is almost like a surrogate for the religions we have given up in large numbers (unlike the US, religion is really not big in the UK and other non-catholic countries in Europe), we now worship our "gods" at the altars which are stadiums and arenas, you only need to look at people's faces to realise that....And everyone worships their gods in different ways.I want a decent concert with a few setlist changes, thank you, not the same old warhorses all over again, the problem is merely financial, they have found a marketing formula that sells to the masses and they aren't gonna take a cut in profits just because we would like to hear Dance Little Sister.I would come in my pants if they did play it , the rest of the audience wouldn't get it, and to be quite honest, I think they can't be arsed anymore in putting the rehearsal time in for an extensive back catalogue , plus to that add advancing ages, senior moments and alcohol/drugs issues, and you have the reason for the Vegas act. They aren't young artists anymore who have a "suffering pressure" that leads them to create
great and wonderful and innovative master songs anymore, they are to different degrees old and jaded, full stop, Mick and Charlie being the more proffessional and reliable ones....
Personally, I have worsdhipped them for many years, but
I am not into bootlegs, I don't know setlists by heart from concerts played twenty years ago, and it would never EVER occur to me to take paper and pen in to write the setlist down,I would not go to where they used to live,
and I don't do hero worshipping (stalking), I want the music, not a piece of them...But everyone is free to decide how they want to worship, fine by me.
It's all a matter of perspective, "truth" does not exist per se, it depends on how something is perceived , and will always be highly subjective. Highly subjectively speaking they were fucking amazing yesterday, ok?

Wow. I sense some hostility from the Daily Mail. ... Still, the plain facts are pretty damning. It seems the Stones take the term "rock 'n' roll royalty" quite literally.

I was turned on by both of them together, when indivdually I feel nothing, there's a chemistry there, and I have a feeling they did the nasty... you can tell it was just too much for them to try to fight the feeling!

Yes,Gazza, I'm quite looking forward to it,mainly because of meeting up with all you lot Will it be the Madrid M4 Summit???? . (Is paddy/billy going to O2??? If we carry on like this we'll make 5 concerts and 3artists together in about 12 months...). Honestly,it doesn't get much better than Madrid crowds at Stones concerts, some claim Barcelona is better, but I find that hard to believe, even if the setlist sucks and they fuck up every intro, I promise you will all have the time of your lives!!!! And yes, thanks, Sophia had a blast, it was a great initiation to festivals for her, "small", friendly, laid back, only one stage , I think we will go back again next year. And the islanders are such lovely, friendly , helpful people....

Nasty Habits jos - loved your review. I really, really wish I could have been there and been a part of the magic. As much as I agree with SS's assesment of modern Stones odds vs. the cost of the buy-in, it sounds like you rolled a hard eight rather than sixes, sevens and nines . . .

And SS -- What are the poker chips shaped like at the Stones casino? I think you know! That place would cost me so much money . . .

Vegas post = A+.
